Genevieve Wang wants to use her MBA studies to jumpstart an entrepreneurial venture that will address what she calls one of the nation's "wicked" social problems: poor health habits leading to obesity and chronic disease. Her idea won the Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge, and she will spend the summer with her three teammates building their company.
"When you're an entrepreneur, you have to get your hands dirty in every aspect of the enterprise. On the business side, this means you need a solid foundation in finance, marketing, operations, and strategy. The Berkeley MBA curriculum is helping me get a lot of exposure quickly, across all the fundamental disciplines."
"My classmates are all pursuing their passions. I know people who have backgrounds at Wall Street investment banks and are passionate about breaking into health care or clean tech. Making that kind of move is scary, but Berkeley-Haas provides a supportive environment to make changes in your life."
"I'm stacking my elective schedule with classes that will help me launch my start-up. Both "New Venture Finance" and "Innovation in Health Care" were really helpful. They taught me the venture capital approach to evaluating a venture. I'm also excited about taking classes outside Haas, possibly at the School of Information or the School of Public Health. That is a real advantage of going to school at UC Berkeley."
"For me, going Beyond Yourself means not limiting yourself to what you've done in the past. The Berkeley-Haas culture encourages you to shoot for more than you think you can achieve, to risk trying something different."
