Yong Wan Hong received his bachelor's degree in economics from Seoul National University in Korea. His background includes more than six years with Bain & Company both in San Francisco and in Seoul, Korea. While at Haas, he focused on gaining technology knowledge he puts to use now that he's back at Bain & Company.
A foundation in technology management
I came to Haas to develop an academic foundation and understanding of technology management and strategy. Korea is still a developing country in terms of technology. However, it's a leader in terms of mobile telecommunications and Internet use, with higher penetration rates than in the United States.
Engaging electives
As an international student, I found Haas to have an international environment and orientation. Professors don't just focus on US events but also cover events and trends in other countries as well. I found this was especially true in the Wireless Communications elective course.
I was particularly impressed by the passion shown by Professor Reza Moazzami, who taught Wireless Communications. His feedback to assigned case studies helped me a great deal in understanding the dynamics of the technology industry and evaluating new business opportunities. The class itself provided me with an in-depth understanding of the structure of the industry, the various business models and the opportunities for start-ups and new entrants. In addition, the discussions with key executives in the industry encouraged my entrepreneurial spirit.
