Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships are an excellent resource for students seeking help with the cost of their Haas education and can help reduce the dependence on loans to cover their educational expenses.

In general, there are two types of scholarships: institutional scholarships from Haas and outside scholarships from other organizations. This section contains information on both types of scholarships, as well as resources to help locate and research possible funding opportunities.

Haas Scholarships for Entering Students

In 2011-2012, the Haas School awarded over $5 million in scholarships to domestic and international students. Listed below are some of the most significant scholarship awards available for full-time MBA students. While some scholarships are awarded at the time of admission, others require a separate application to be completed after admission. The following are all two-year awards, one quarter of which is disbursed at the beginning of each semester. See a complete list of Haas scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships awarded at the time of admission

Dean's Fellowships
The Dean’s Fellowships $100,000 ($50,000 per year) are awarded based on exceptional merit and career potential as demonstrated in the admissions application. Applicants awarded a Dean’s Fellowship will be contacted directly by Dean Rich Lyons.

Haas Merit Scholarships
Haas Merit Scholarships $50,000 ($25,000 per year) are awarded based on exceptional merit and career potential as demonstrated in the application. No separate application form or special request is needed. Applicants awarded a Haas Merit Scholarship are notified in writing with their admission letter.

The Consortium Fellowship for Graduate Study in Management is an alliance of top business schools working in partnership with corporations to encourage diversity in business. Candidates who apply, and are accepted through The Consortium, are considered for full tuition and fee fellowships. Applicants should apply for admission using The Consortium application.

CJ White Fellowship
The CJ White fellowship $50,000 ($25,000 per year) is designed to provide assistance to deserving MBA students pursuing careers in financial services, with a preference for students with career goals in investment banking.

Blue Duck Scholarship
Sponsored by alumnus John Natt (MBA '69). Awarded to an MBA student who has received his or her undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon.

Haas Achievement Awards
Haas Achievement Awards $50,000 ($25,000 per year) are awarded to individuals who have achieved tremendous success in spite of significant economic, educational, health-related, or other obstacles.

Maxwell Fellows Program
Established in memory of Brian Maxwell, this award is intended to memorialize the drive, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit which led Brian to achieve success in his business and athletic pursuits. The fellowship will be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit and a drive to create and implement innovative projects, products, and ideas. The fellowship includes funding in the amount of $50,000 per year. For more information about Brian Maxwell and the fellowship, please visit their website.

You must be admitted before you can complete the online fellowship application. Round 1 admits should apply by the first Review Date of January 19, 2012. Round 2 admits should apply by the second Review Date of March 8, 2012. We expect only one recipient will be selected this year. Below are the application essay questions. There is a 1,000 word limit per essay question response. We will notify the recipient by April 16, 2012.

Berkeley MBA Grants
The Berkeley MBA Grant is awarded to individuals who demonstrate significant financial need. Amounts range from $20,000 to $40,000 ($10,000 to $20,000 per year.

Investment Banking Fellowship

The Investment Banking Fellowship is a $5,000 award for MBA students pursuing careers in investment banking. The fellowship includes an investment banking mentor and preference in finance electives. The award is disbursed in the spring of the first year. Another $5,000 may be awarded in fall of the second year if student successfully completes an investment banking internship and remains in good standing, academically and professionally. Students apply during fall of their first year in a competitive selection process.

The VA website provides extensive details on the education benefits available to veterans in various statuses, such as vocational/rehabilitation, the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and active duty: http://www.gibill.va.gov/

Yellow Ribbon Program
The Haas School of Business has been approved to receive matching funds from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through the Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP). Students who believe they qualify for 100% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits (also known as Chapter 33) can be considered. The purpose of the Yellow Ribbon Program is to provide funding for any gap in tuition and fees not already covered by the VA or other sources. Based on current legislation signed by the president in January 2011, the only funding gap not covered by the VA for such veterans at UC Berkeley’s Full-time MBA program would be for Nonresident tuition ($12,245 per year).
