Kara_Berkeley
Good afternoon and thank you for your interest in the Berkeley MBA Program at the Haas School of Business. As Lee said, my name is Kara Hayman and I am Assistant Director of Admissions. I look forward to answering your questions.
Corinne_Berkeley
Hello and thank you for joining us today! My name is Corinne Kang and I'm the Associate Director of Admissions for the Full-Time MBA program. I look forward to answering your admissions questions today on the chat!
Stephanie_Berkeley
Welcome! My name is Stephanie Fujii, Senior Associate Director of FTMBA Admissions. Thank you for joining us today. We're excited to answer your questions!
Pete_Berkeley
Thank you all for signing in--my name is Peter Johnson, and I'm Director of FTMBA Admissions.
Raveen
What portion of international students stay in US after graduation?
Pete_Berkeley
Raveen, this varies from year to year, but it has been about half of our international graduates.
sachin_agarwal_germany
Thanks for organizing this chat - it is especially helpful for folks located geographically far away like me. My question is, if someone applies a few weeks before Nov 4th (the first round deadline), will the application decision come earlier or are all decisions sent out on the last day only?
Lee_Moderator
Hi Sachin -- all decisions are released on the same day.
Meeshy
What is admissions looking for in short and long term goals?
Corinne_Berkeley
Meeshy: Regardless of the industry or function, we will be looking to see that you are able to clearly articulate your short and long term career goals. For example, how will your work experience to date and the Berkeley MBA prepare you for these goals? Do you understand what the knowledge gaps and potential challenges are?
Brian Lyons
Regarding GMAT test scores, is there any way to confirm when you've received them?
Lee_Moderator
Hi Brian -- we review with self-reported scores and verify the scores later in the admission process. If we find at that time that e do not have your official scores, we will work with you to get the scores in.
DenverNuggets22
What do you consider to be the most important component of a successful application to the Haas MBA program?
Stephanie_Berkeley
DenverNuggets22 -- This is a common question! There are three main areas we're evaluating when reviewing applications -- academic performance, professional accomplishments, and personal qualities. All of these areas are important as it is an extremely holistic process. We're trying to select a class with diverse backgrounds, and who we feel confident will succeed academically in our program, contribute meaningfully based on experiences to date and fit with our culture. We have a podcast available on our website where we talk about all of these areas in more detail -- what we're looking for, common mistakes, etc.
Jouyang
Hi. The economy is in recession and some experts predict that it could last as long as 2014. Historically, how is the job placement rate of Berkeley graduates in times of recession? My biggest fear is entering the MBA program, accruing $150k+ in debt, and not being able to find a job because of the economic conditions.
Pete_Berkeley
Jouyang, studying in a US MBA program is always a significant investment, so it is wise to think about these issues. Our rate of students employed at graduation and within 90 days of graduation has been pretty consistent. For exact numbers, visit our career services web site at
www.haas.berkeley.edu/groups/careercenter/employment_reports.html for employment reports over the past 6 years.
DS'09
As a reapplicant, I have submitted one new recommendation. Would that be considered weak compared to submitting 2 recommendations?
Kara_Berkeley
As a reapplicant, submission of recommendations letters is optional but strongly encouraged. It may be helpful to submit a second recommendation letter if you think it will strengthen your application and help the committee understand your strengths more clearly.
DS'09
I recently changed employers and decided to ask for a recommendation from my older employer as I have worked there for almost 6.5 yrs. I felt it inappropriate to ask my manager at the new job to ask for a recommendation as it might question my dedication and commitment to the new job. Is this ok?
Pete_Berkeley
DS'09, yes, it should be fine.
carol
If I want to transfer to Berkeley, how should I apply?
Lee_Moderator
Carol, we are not able to accept transfer units. You would have to begin your program over, although you may be able to waive some of the core courses.
Stephanie_Berkeley
We have podcasts available on our website that cover both application tips and interviewing tips. I recommend listening to both of them as they provide more detail on our expectations, what we're looking for, common pitfalls, etc.
K
First of all, thank you for hosting this chat. I have a question about the application. In the supplemental section of the application where it asks you to list the organization / extracurricular activities and the dates, do I have to list the specific dates that I volunteered with the organization (ie 10/01/2003, 7/8/2004, 5/9/2005) for something like Habitat for Humanity or can I list the dates as 10/01/2003 - 5/9/2005?
Pete_Berkeley
K, listing the months is fine in the extracurricular section.
EBerman
Good afternoon. I am a re-applicant. Should I re-submit all of the essays or just what is recommended in the application instructions? Is there anything else I should be adding to my application this time around?
Lee_Moderator
The AdCom does take note of how much effort is put into a reapplication. You may wish to rewrite any essays that you feel were not strong last year.
Vishal
Does Berkeley require original official transcripts directly sent from undergraduate colleges?
Lee_Moderator
Vishal, we require original transcripts or copies attested as true by your school.
Kara_Berkeley
Most of our offers of admission are made from Rounds 1, 2, and 3. Only a small number of Round 4 applicants are offered admission each year. Overall, there isn't a huge difference between round 1 and round 2. If you need the extra time between round 1 and round 2 to strengthen your application, we encourage you to take it!
Stephanie_Berkeley
The only round we really caution people against is our final round, Round 4. By that point we've made most of our offers of admission. Over the past few years, we've made a significant number of offers from the first two rounds, and even round three in some years. It really depends on the strength of the pool in each round -- which changes from year to year. The most important thing is to apply once you feel you have the strongest application possible.

Ashley
How does your proximity to Silicon Valley affect the curriculum and activities at Haas?
Pete_Berkeley
Ashley, our proximity to the Silicon Valley region impacts the curriculum in many ways, ranging from closer ties to the companies in this region for hiring purposes (which you'll notice on our employment reports), to significant community involvement in on-campus activities (the Entrepreneur's Forum, for example) and providing high-level speakers from particular industries such as venture capital and digital media for classes and events.
Michelle
What is the purpose of having the Waiver Section on the Recommendation Form? Is choosing to waive my right to access the letter any better than not waiving that right?
Lee_Moderator
Michelle, if you do not waive your right to see the letter, your recommender may be more guarded in their comments, because they will know that you may read them. However, the AdCom will know whether or not you waived the right to see a letter...
Yvan Castilloux
Hi, I see on the website that you have a strong focus on entrepreneurship. Do lots of people who have already started up a company usually apply?
Corinne_Berkeley
Yvan: Yes, absolutely! Many of our applicants and enrolled students have already started their own businesses and are looking to fill knowledge gaps or expand their skillsets and networks through the Berkeley MBA Program.
Karina
Good afternoon, I was wondering if you could tell me if there is a limit to the number of electives that can be taken outside of the business school?
Kara_Berkeley
Karina, the curriculum is organized to allow students to take 6 units outside of the business school. You can, however, work with Student Services to increase that number when possible and appropriate.
Param1
Hi Corinne, I would like to know if the admissions committee would prefer people who have already secured admission at a different school but would like to pursue their MBA at Haas.
Corinne_Berkeley
Param1: We evaluate each of our applicants based on their qualifications and fit for the Berkeley MBA Program. Admission at another school's program has no bearing on our admissions decision.
archana
Who will be considered California residents for the full time MBA program?
Lee_Moderator
Archana, for information on residency, please contact the University's residency office. In general, US citizens and permanent residents who have lived in California for a full year prior to the beginning of a semester are eligible for resident's tuition.
Varun Marwah
Thanks for hosting the chat today. I was wondering if you could comment on any new academic initiatives that are being contemplated by professors and could be introduced in the near future. Thanks!
Pete_Berkeley
Varun, there are always new programs happening on campus--two that I would point out are the current activities in the field of energy (Center for Energy and Environmental Innovation) and the Asia Business Center, both of which you can learn more about on our website. Other initiatives include a revised format for the leadership core course which will be rolled out this spring.
DS'09
As a reapplicant I have updated my goals and leadership essay. Other short essays, except for the new one, have not changed. Can I update only these essays?
Kara_Berkeley
There are a few required essay questions as a reapplicant. Please review the application instructions for the specific essay numbers. You can also visit
http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/specialcircumstances.html for a list of specific requirements. Updating any other application materials is optional, although the Admissions Committee does note the effort that candidates put into the reapplication.
Bruno
How heavily is the case method used, both in core classes and electives?
Corinne_Berkeley
Bruno: Our courses - both core and elective - use a mixture of teaching styles, including the case method, lectures, and experiential learning opportunities. This would be a great question to ask our current students who are participating in this chat as well!
Ashley
What role do teams play in the curriculum at Haas?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Ashley, teams play a critical role not only in academics but also in all of our student-run extracurricular activities. Every course has some sort of team/group project component. In your first semester, you're assigned to a study group of 5 students (all with different backgrounds and perspectives) and you take all of your core courses with this study group. You may have a final team project in organization behavior and a group case study in finance....the type of team project involved depends on the specific course. But teamwork is a very important of the learning experience and the culture at Haas. For more information on one of our most popular team-based experiential learning courses, check out the student blogs for the International Business Development program:

David Schlosberg
If any of us was to be so lucky as to get an interview, is there a date set for Super Saturday? Is that the only opportunity to interview?
Kara_Berkeley
David, interviews can happen both on and off-campus so they are not limited to just our Super Saturday events. Super Saturday events will happen in January and March of 2009 with more specific information upon invitation to interview.
joules
Thank you for hosting this opportunity for us. What should an older male applicant (i.e. 30y/o) who works full time and does not have as many opportunities to volunteer emphasize in his application?
Pete_Berkeley
Joules, we view all candidates in the context of their situation. In certain positions and industries, there may have fewer opportunities for community involvement due to difficult travel schedules, long work hours, etc. You should emphasize what you have done, and why.
Bruno
Just to double check, do you need official copies of transcripts from the school where I studied abroad AND a translation from Spanish?
Lee_Moderator
Yes, please...
sarah
Is there any disadvantage in taking the GMAT more than twice?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Sarah, no disadvantage at all. We do review all tests you send us, but consider your top score as your qualifying one for the application.
lxn
Hello. I have my original marksheets from my undergraduate at Bombay University. Getting official transcripts is a cumbersome process. Would the marksheets be considered transcripts?
Lee_Moderator
Ixn, we need documents attested by your school as true. Xeroxes of your personal marksheets, without the attestation, would not be sufficient for admission.
Marvin Park
How many students are admitted per round?
Kara_Berkeley
Marvin, we do not have a set number of applicants we admit in each round. The number of offers of admission made out of each round each year varies and depends on the competitiveness of the pool in each round. Last year, we admitted a total of 442 students over all four rounds. For more profile data, visit
http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/community/classprofile.html.
Shaan
Hi Kara, Lee, and Vina- I understand that Berkeley admissions is very selective about the people they admit, but what is a key quality that all Berkeley MBAs have?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Shaan -- it's hard to narrow it down to just one quality! A few of the characteristics off the top of my head that I feel describe our students include collaborative, passionate, involved and engaged, creative...I could go on. I would encourage you to connect with current students and ask them what attracted them to Haas and what qualities they'd use to describe their classmates.
Yolanda
Hello. First, thank you for holding this forum for applicants. I think it is great. I was wondering if the Admissions Committee could give us some insight on their expectations for application volume this year, given the current state of the market?
Pete_Berkeley
Yolanda, although there are some forces that may push more applicants to business school (fewer opportunities for advancement in the current economic climate, etc.) there are other forces at work, too, including concern over the economy and reluctance to leave good positions. As a result, I think it is very difficult to predict at this time. Since we are not yet to our first round deadline, we have relatively few data points to make a prediction.

Hi Corinne, Kara and Stephanie, I have a question regarding the first question of Section I: Supplementary Question. Currently I'm taking some time off from my full time job and changed to contracting about 3 months ago. I'm still getting my supervisor from my full time job to write one of the recommendation letters, does that still count as a letter from my "current" supervisor?
Corinne_Berkeley
Cat: Since you are taking time off from your full-time job, it sounds like your supervisor from that position would not count as your "current" supervisor. Rather, it sounds like the person for whom you are working as a contractor would be considered your "current" supervisor. However, since you have only been in this contracted role for only 3 months, you may want to consider requesting a letter of recommendation from your previous supervisor if s/he can provide more detailed responses to the questions in the recommendation form.
Yong-yi
How will interviews for the admissions process work?
Kara_Berkeley
The Admissions Committee conducts interviews of applicants by invitation only. Receiving an invitation to interview should be taken as a sign of interest on the part of the Admissions Committee, and few applicants will be admitted without an interview. Interviews are offered both on-campus and in cities around the world by current students and alumni. Interview invitations will start going out about 4-6 weeks after the round deadline and will continue to go out on a rolling basis up to the notification deadline for each round.
Will the thrill
How much does Berkeley emphasize work experience? I have two years of work experience out of college but I have heard Berkeley wants at least 4-6 years of experience.
Pete_Berkeley
Will, if your two years of work experience show progression and increased responsibilities, it may be enough. The middle 80% range of work experience for students we have admitted recently is 3-8 years, so 10% are coming in below three years. The quality of the work experience in more important than the quantity.
Brie
Does California state residency, or lack thereof, affect your likelihood of acceptance?
Jeff_Moderator
Not at all Brie. We have no quotas for CA or non-CA applications.
Manuel L (Chile)
Hi, from international universities do you require only the official transcript of the grades or do you also need a copy of the diploma or certificate of graduation?
Lee_Moderator
Manuel, we also require the degree certificate.
Lily
What is Berkeley's view on people who want to do MBA as a stepping stone before pursuing a PhD degree?
Pete_Berkeley
Lily, it's somewhat dim, frankly. The purpose of the MBA is quite different than a PhD. The PhD program is focused on research and teaching, and the MBA is neither necessary nor required as a preliminary step. Usually, the path is clear based on what you will do afterward, and you can apply for the PhD program directly after earning an undergraduate degree.
debbie
Will it help if an applicant's undergraduate degree was from Cal?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi debbie, we love our Cal grads, but no, it does not affect our admissions decision. We look at a wide range of criteria. Academic performance at schools known for academic rigor, such as Cal, is something that is considered but we don't play favorites.
Lesley
Thank you for answering our questions today. If I apply for the 2009 school year, I will have had 3 years of work experience when enrolling, while I know that is less than average, will this be a big obstacle for my application to be successful? If so, will a denial be held against a future reapplication?
Pete_Berkeley
Lesley, 3 years is within our middle 80% range of the students we have admitted, and we value the quality of the work experience more than the quantity. If you do not gain admission, it isn't something we would hold against you as a reapplicant. In fact, in most years the admit rate for re-applicants is slightly higher than that of first-time applicants.
Preetmohan
Hello-I work in the media/nonprofit sector and have a limited quant background. I took econ and finance in college but in order to brush up my math, I recently completed the MBAMath program (
www.mbamath.com) used by multiple schools as a pre-MBA "math camp." I also enrolled a UC Extension Stats class, and am wondering if my quant background is sufficient to apply in R1 before completing the stats course or if I should wait until R2 when I have completed stats? Thanks.
Corinne_Berkeley
Preetmohan: Great question! Even though you may have a limited quant background, if you have been able to demonstrate quantitative proficiency through other means, such as a strong quant subscore on the GMAT, you may consider applying in R1 and then submitting your stats grade when you complete the course. However, if you feel that quant is a potential weakness in your application and the completion of the stats course (with a strong grade!) would help strengthen your application, I would encourage you to apply when you know you are putting your best foot forward, in R2.
William Webb
For those of us applying from out of state, is it true that you can become a resident and pay in-state tuition for the second year of your MBA?
Pete_Berkeley
William, many students who follow our advice at orientation are able to establish California residency for their second year, which results in in-state tuition.
sharon1
If I am looking to shift careers would it be okay to indicate that in the essays? Will it be held against me if I have a general idea of what field I want to move to, without any solid goals in mind yet?
Kara_Berkeley
Sharon1, absolutely include that information so we can fully understand your short and long term goals. About 50% of our class is looking to change career paths. Keep in mind that it's important to be clear how an MBA will help you do that!
Walter Leung
Hi there. I'm interested in learning more about your Entrepreneurship track. Can you tell me more about the Berkeley Business Incubator?
Corinne_Berkeley
Walter: The Berkeley Business Incubator is now called the Berkeley Entrepreneurship Laboratory. It was founded over 10 years ago, and has helped many of our students get their startups off the ground. You can learn more about this resource online at:
http://entrepreneurship.berkeley.edu/berkbusincub.asp. Also, don't forget to explore all the other resources available through our Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation!
dmaldonado
Regarding the short and long term goals, how specific would you like us to be? Do you expect a specific industry? A specific kind of company? Or a specific job?
Pete_Berkeley
dmaldonado, it's not necessary to identify a specific company, but you should have a pretty good idea of your short and medium-term goals. If you do have a specific company and job in mind, it is ok to mention it, but it's not necessary.
Peter
Can you please talk about the importance of the GMAT to the overall admission decision? I.e. if someone has a really strong background but low GMAT score does that disqualify the individual from applying?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Peter, we like to say that we admit people not GMAT scores -- and that is absolutely true. It really is a holistic process -- we are looking at academic ability/performance, professional accomplishments and personal qualities to select those candidates we feel are the best fit for our program. This also means, though, that one part of the application doesn't necessarily balance out weaker areas. Listen to our podcast for more detailed information on how we evaluate each area of the application. When we look at the GMAT, we're using your performance on the GMAT in conjunction with your undergraduate performance to determine if you can succeed academically in our program. We don't want to admit students who will struggle in the classroom and therefore be unable to take advantage of all of the other opportunities outside of the classroom that make up the Berkeley MBA experience. However, if there are other areas of your application that are incredibly strong, we may still consider you. Overall though, because it can be such a competitive process, you give yourself a much higher chance of being a successful candidate if your GMAT falls within our competitive range, or middle 80%.
Daniel Helmhold
Given the recent financial crisis, I'm guessing there will be a significant surge in the number of people from the finance sector. As someone outside of the finance sector, I'm curious if you will maintain a balance of incoming industry specialties or if we can expect a lopsided incoming class favoring finance?
Corinne_Berkeley
Daniel: From an admissions perspective, this year will be no different from others in the sense that we will be looking to admit a strong and diverse class from a variety of professional backgrounds.
Brad
Thanks for providing us the opportunity to chat with such a large portion of the admissions team. My question is about reapplicants. Besides the additional essay that was not a part of the application last year, how much of the previous application do you recommend we complete?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Brad -- for reapplicants, we're asking the additional question of how you're a stronger candidate this year versus when you last applied. I think you should definitely take advantage of the optional essay to tell us why you think you're a stronger candidate, and I would complete any other areas of the application that help show us why you're more competitive. For example, if you were recently promoted or worked on a significant project, you may want to rewrite some of your essays to talk about the new experiences. Or you may want to submit a new letter of recommendation (which can be from one of your previous recommenders) that talks about your new level of responsibility, etc. It is really up to you to decide what you want the admissions committee to know about the steps you've taken to strengthen your candidacy.
ilana
Hello and thanks again from Rio! How should I go about the recommendation letter since I run my own business? Should I get it from people I used to work for?
Jeff_Moderator
Welcome, ilana. In situations such as yours, we would look for recommendations from previous supervisors or current clients, vendors, board members (unless you are a peer), or possibly investors. We want to avoid the peer group or co-workers as there is always a question of independence or unexplained relationships. Some chose to ask the leaders of volunteer activities they are involved in for recommendations. In addition to the relationship, we are looking to the direct, professional expertise that this person can attest to.
Ashley
In relation to Haas, where do most of the MBA students live?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Ashley - for the first year, most students live off-campus within 15 minutes (either walking, biking, or driving) of Haas.
Sunny
I am considering re-taking the GMAT. However, I want to finish my application first. Can I retake the GMAT and report my new score after I submit my application?
Kara_Berkeley
If you choose to retake the GMAT after the application deadline for the round in which you applied, we will only consider your new score if you request in writing that your application be considered in a later round. This written request must be made at least one week prior to the notification deadline for the round in which you originally applied, and you should include a copy of your preliminary score report with the new scores. For example, if you applied by November 4 for Round One consideration and would like us to consider an improved GMAT score from a test taken as late as our Round Three application deadline, January 30, you must request no later than January 21 (e.g., one week prior to our Round One notification deadline of January 28) that your application be moved from Round One to Round Three. Please note that we will not move your application from one round to another simply because you plan to retake the GMAT; rather, you must have a new GMAT score in hand at the time you make your request. Furthermore, we cannot guarantee that we will consider the results of tests taken after our final application deadline of March 11.

A.K.
Hello, I grew up in California but now live in D.C. Would I be considered a CA resident for tuition purposes?
Lee_Moderator
A.K., all residency questions should go to the University's residence office -- but the short answer is that if you were voting and held a drivers license elsewhere, you are probably no longer considered a resident.
StephR
Do we need to send transcripts before the deadline or can we have them sent after?
Jeff_Moderator
Thanks StephR. Transcripts and support documents should be postmarked before or on the deadline.
jean
What would you say sets Haas apart from other top Business schools?
Pete_Berkeley
Jean, this is a difficult question to answer in a chat format. Some of the things I would mention include our focus on
leading through innovation and experiential learning, culture of collaboration, outstanding faculty, and ties to the particular business ecosystem in the SF Bay Area.
Kendra
I am an applicant from China. I got my bachelor's degree in China and received my master's degree from a university in the United States. Can I waive my TOEFL scores?
Lee_Moderator
Kendra, if your masters program included a full year of academic coursework, the TOEFL would not be required.
deepK
Hi Corinne and Kara, Can you shed some light on what it generally takes for an applicant with fewer years of experience (3) to get admitted to Haas?
Stephanie_Berkeley
deepK, we are looking for three main areas when we evaluate applications (check out our podcast!): academic performance, professional accomplishments and personal qualities. It is important that applicants are strong in all three of these areas. In terms of work experience, we're not looking at the quantity of experience, rather the quality and richness. So we'll be asking how much progression you've had over the course of your career, leadership opportunities, what type of impact you've had on your organization, how your experience to date is in line with your career goals, etc.
Bmoss
A question about the application: During the 1st semester of my 3rd year of undergraduate studies, I studied abroad internationally (outside of the US) sponsored through a program at a different US university than my home school. For a transcript for this portion of my studies, would a transcript from the sponsoring university suffice? Also, because the courses abroad were Credit/No Credit, I cannot accurately calculate the GPA of my final 2 years of undergraduate study. Can you please direct me in how you would like me to indicate that on my application?
Kara_Berkeley
Bmoss, you do not need to try to calculate the study abroad GPA into your degree-granting institution GPA. You only need to submit the study abroad transcript from the study abroad institution if you took quantitative courses there. If you did not take quant courses, the documentation on your degree granting institution transcript is sufficient.
Helen
Hello, I have a question about the official transcripts that should be provided. I have taken some courses to meet the requirements for getting a certification. Do you require those courses listed and transcripts as well?
Lee_Moderator
Helen, if the courses were academic courses rather than professional seminars, you should probably include them.
sachin_agarwal_germany
I recognize the hard efforts of Haas to help students secure loans for the MBA. There was recent news of Citibank pulling the Citiassist loans at some MBA programs (although Haas was not mentioned). Has the financial aid-loan scenario become exceptionally challenging for incoming students (e.g. students without US cosigners)?
Pete_Berkeley
Sachin, Citibank has unfortunately pulled our no-cosigner program for international students, too, which is what I've heard from most of my colleagues at other schools. We are working on alternatives for next year as we speak.
Jessica
Similar to a previous question, if we have requested transcripts from our undergraduate university and they were sent to us in sealed/signed envelopes, can we just mail those to Berkeley or do they have to come from the school?
Kara_Berkeley
Jessica, you can mail those directly to us. In fact, we prefer that you collect all of your supplemental application materials and send them to us in one envelope. Make sure to keep your transcripts in the signed and sealed envelopes.
Jess
For study abroad and community college transcripts, is it sufficient if these grades and schools are clearly noted on your official transcript from the institution you graduated from?
Lee_Moderator
Jess, if the school, grade, and number of units are listed, we do not require a separate transcript.
wura
What kind of joint/dual degree programs does Haas offer?
Lee_Moderator
Wura, we have a MBA/MPH, a JD/MBA, and a MBA/MA in International and Area Studies.
Doh!
If I have a lower GMAT score (650), what portion of the application will help remedy this? A higher GPA?
Corinne_Berkeley
The answer to your question partially depends on your subscores. If it is the quant subscore that is lower, a demonstration of strong quant proficiency through undergraduate coursework or a supplemental course could help counterbalance this. In addition, extensive on-the-job quant work could also help address potential concerns regarding quant skills.
Annika
May I ask a question regarding the work experience section of application: what should I do if the country in which I worked is not listed in the drop down menu? (I do not see "Mauritania" here). Thanks.
Kara_Berkeley
Annika, we apologize for that. Please email
mbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu (attn: Jeff) with a request to add Mauritania to our country drop down list.
Chris Grapes
Hi and thanks for chatting with us today. I have a question in regards to the Short Answer Essay number one on the application – "If you could change one thing you've done in your life, what would it be and how would you do it differently?" I've having a hard time thinking of this example - are there any tips you can give to help me think about this in a different way?
Pete_Berkeley
Chris, without venturing too much into the realm of telling you how to answer this, I would guess there is something in your life that didn't go as planned--maybe a project at work that didn't meet expectations, or a great idea that didn't get implemented, or some other type of situation that you would approach differently given the opportunity.
ajohnson
I've been practicing law for 9 years now but am interested in making a transition to the business side. I feel like a MBA will be the perfect transition tool. How does the AdCom view applicants with MORE than 6 years of experience?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi ajohnson. The length of time working post-grad is quite varied. 80% of our current 1st year class have worked between 3-8 years and the oldest was just over 12 years I believe. We are looking for the quality of that work experience. Was there progression to greater responsibility? What type of leadership was the applicant able to display? As with all applicants, you'll just want to be clear as to why you are pursuing a full-time MBA.
Emily T
What is the recommended page range for the recommendations?
Corinne_Berkeley
Emily: We do not have a recommended page range for recommendations. We encourage your recommender to share with us as much information is necessary to answer the questions with detailed responses.
Alexmba
How are reapplicants viewed in comparison to first time applicants?
Pete_Berkeley
Alexmba, the only difference is that we have both applications, and one of the elements we focus on is how you have improved your application since the first time you applied. I can tell you that the admit rate for second-time applicants is slightly higher than for first-time applicants.
tehyun
If everything else is the same, do different rounds mean different chances of getting a place?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi tehyun, this is difficult to say. A strong applicant in round 1 will likely be a strong applicant in round 4. But consider that in each round we do compare applicants against others submitted in that round. Another factor is that as we start to fill the class from earlier rounds and start utilizing the waitlist, competition for the fewer remaining slots will be higher. This is why we do recommend people to submit as early in the cycle as they can while still presenting as strong of an application as they can.
jeremy
Does the admissions office require official transcripts of credits transferred from community college to university during the undergraduate degree?
Katie_Moderator
Jeremy, if the courses, grades, and number of units are reflected on your undergraduate transcript, we do not need transcripts from the community college.
ninad
My question is about references. If I have to choose between a coworker (professional) and an academic advisor with whom I did my MS thesis (I worked with him closely for two years) what would you recommend as a second reference? (My 1st reference will be my supervisor at my current position.)
Stephanie_Berkeley
ninad -- letters of recommendation are the only areas of the application where we get an external perspective on your professional accomplishments. I would look at the questions we ask, think about the work experience/roles you want highlighted, and select your recommenders based on that. We do prefer professional letters of recommendation but it is really up to you to decide.
Rahul New York
Thank you for hosting this session. I have a small application question: For supplemental question 3 (List full-time and part-time jobs held during undergraduate or graduate studies) - should we include summer internships or only jobs held concurrently while taking classes?
Lee_Moderator
Rahul, we want to hear about all employment during your undergrad years -- that would include summers.
Lane
I come from a more creative background and have 4 years of experience in innovation/design strategy. That said, my quant background is fairly light. I know Haas values innovation and creativity and am curious how often you get applicants from creative backgrounds and how they tend to manage the quant requirements. Do we need to do extra to prove ourselves or is fulfilling the basic requirements sufficient?
Corinne_Berkeley
Lane: Applicants from non-quant backgrounds are not required to do anything "extra" in the application. However, in assessing all of our applicants, we will be looking to see a baseline demonstration of quantitative proficiency to ensure that the candidate would be able to handle the academic rigor of the MBA program.
Nayelli Gonzalez
Good afternoon. I read on your website that applicants are not encouraged to submit more than two letters of recommendation. However, I volunteer at a nonprofit organization and the work I do there is related to the work I plan to pursue post-MBA. Considering that the two required letters of recommendation need to be from current or former full-time employers, could I submit a third letter from an individual who works at the nonprofit and supervises my volunteer work? I feel that they could add another dimension to my work experience and strengthen my application. Thanks!
Lee_Moderator
Nayelli, we ask that applicants submit only two letters. If you are placed on the waitlist, you will be given an opportunity to submit additional letters.
Dave
Hello. I am trying to decide on who should write my recommendations. A former manager of mine is a Haas graduate and would write me a great recommendation, but I haven't worked with him directly in about 2.5 years (although he still serves as my mentor). Generally speaking, is it at all beneficial to have a successful Haas graduate write a recommendation, or should I opt for a more recent manager? Thanks.
Kara_Berkeley
Dave, when selecting your recommenders, it's important to pick people who know you well and can attest to your professional strengths. You also want to be sure the person can speak to your ability to succeed within an MBA program and contribute to the community. If you feel this recommender knows you well, he might be a good choice.
Vancouver Michael
Haas offers an optional essay in the application regarding the education and profession of your parents. My parents are successful entrepreneurs, but have no formal post-secondary education. How will this be viewed in my application, positively or negatively? If I omit this essay will it look like I am hiding something?
Pete_Berkeley
Vancouver Michael, you are free to answer this question or not, as you wish, but we are often impressed by first-generation college students who have achieved much in spite of having fewer opportunities than those who come from families where going to college and graduate school is the norm.
SR
While evaluating a re-applicant, are both responses to an essay reviewed ?
Lee_Moderator
SR, the reviewers have access to the original application and may choose to consider parts of it.
Yao
Will it impact my visa if I apply for EWMBA? My understanding is that it is common for EWMBA students to work a part-time job in the daytime. Will this be considered a poor work-study balance? What are the chances for EWMBA students of getting a visa?
Lee_Moderator
Yao, please direct this question to the EWMBA office.
zilaida
My BA is in Public Relations and Advertising, so my transcript will not reflect a strong analytical background. I read on the website that those accepted without a strong math background might be asked to taka a math class before beginning school. Will this be statistics, calculus, or both?
Stephanie_Berkeley
We will look at your GMAT quant subscore and any quantitative background you have in your work experience as well. If overall, you feel that your quantitative background and prep is on the weaker side, yes, we would recommend taking calculus and/or stats.
shantanu
How strict is the word limit on the essay questions?
Jeff_Moderator
Shantanu, the application will allow you to go over the limit, but we do not recommend it. We will be looking to see if applicants can keep to the limit and can provide their answers in a concise, direct manner, such as is needed in both business school and the business world.
rothdoc
Do you use the AWA score from the GMAT? I've heard that it's not really looked at.
Stephanie_Berkeley
rothdoc -- at Berkeley we look at the AWA score, so don't skip it!
Jonathan H-G
What is considered a competitive score on the GMAT test?
Lee_Moderator
Jonathan, the middle 80% percent is 670 to 760.
Peter
Can you please talk about the role GMAT scores play in the admissions decision?
Pete_Berkeley
Peter, GMAT scores are just one of the things we consider in evaluating your academic preparation. I would encourage you to shoot for a score in the middle 80% range (670-760) and present a solid application in other ways for the best chances of admission.
Tom
I will be traveling with for most of the rest of the year, mainly to southern California. I would prefer to have an interview in person rather than over the phone. How flexible are interview schedules and locations?
Katie_Moderator
Tom, interviews are conducted by invitation only. If the admissions committee invites you to interview, our interview coordinator will contact you to set up a convenient time and location. We conduct interviews in various locations in the US and around the world.
GoHaas
What is Berkeley's policy on admitting applicants with a GPA below 3.0? How disadvantaged would that applicant be, regardless of other aspects of his/her application?
Lee_Moderator
Someone with a GPA below 3.0 would be at a significant competitive disadvantage, and would have to show an extremely strong application in all other aspects.
Shikha
I joined my current company just 5 months back and worked for my previous employer for 3.5 years. In such a case would you still suggest a recommendation from the current employer?
Kara_Berkeley
Shikha, you want to pick recommenders who know you well and can attest to your professional strengths and abilities. We ask for at least one recommendation to come from a current or former supervisor so obtaining a rec from a former supervisor is fine!
Mike Miller
Do you think a student with a JD and an engineering undergrad, both from top schools, has a realistic shot with a 680 GMAT?
Pete_Berkeley
Mike Miller, a 680 is within our 80% range, so if other elements of the application are strong (work experience, etc.) then I would say that you would have a realistic shot. If you are hoping for scholarship assistance, however, you will want to be in the 700s.
Nui
Hi, everyone and thanks for your time. Is it discouraged to get recommendation letters only from your current place of employment? I can definitely get letters from former places of employment, but I feel as though my work at my current place of employment is a more detailed reflection of my leadership and management skills.
Corinne_Berkeley
Nui: In selecting your recommenders, I would encourage you to select the two recommenders who can provide the most comprehensive and detailed reflection of your professional accomplishments throughout your work history.
Brent
In the R1 vs. R2 debate, I've heard that it's typically better to submit a strong application as opposed to trying to meet a deadline. Since there will likely be a spike in applications this year, does this argument still carry weight?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Brent, it is always better to submit a strong application. Even if we experience an increase in applications, an increase in quantity does not equal an increase in quality. It is much more important for you to take the time you need to make sure your essays are fine-tuned, you've talked to your recommenders, your GMAT is competitive, etc.
Indian_Phoenix
My Bachelor's and Master's GPA is scored on a total of 9. How can this be conveyed to the application committee?
Lee_Moderator
Our readers are skilled at evaluating many different grading scales. Do not attempt to convert a non-4.0 scale for them -- just report your grades.
dedwardsy
Hi, I´m from Chile and regarding the transcripts I need to know if I can send a copy of the official translation instead of the original as it is very costly for me to get another translation. (They are made by the foreign affairs ministry.)
Lee_Moderator
If the copy you send is signed and sealed, we can accept it. We are not able to accept simple copies with no attestation from the translator.
Saeid
Good afternoon. My GPA in my master's degree is considerably higher than my undergraduate. Does it count? I have heard the focus is mostly on the undergraduate GPA.
Pete_Berkeley
Saeid, we look at both your undergraduate and graduate performance, although performance in UG is based on a broader set of discipline areas, and usually carries more weight for that reason.
Doh!
What percentile is the 80% range for the quant section alone?
Jeff_Moderator
Doh!, we don't have those breakdowns for the subscores.
Paul
My transcripts show the date my UK degree was conferred. Do I still need to provide the degree certificate which my college is not able to duplicate?
Lee_Moderator
Paul, if it shows the name of the degree conferred and the date of the degree, and it is issued by the school granting the degree, we may not need a degree certificate.
CarlosLascurain
Hi, I am from Mexico and studied at ITESM. I already have my transcripts translated to English. Do I also need to send the original ones in Spanish?
Lee_Moderator
Carlos, we require the documents in both English and the original language.
Ali
Can you offer any suggestions for those of us who do not have a quant background about how we can "demonstrate" our abilities aside from doing well on the math part of the GMAT?
Pete_Berkeley
Ali, hopefully you have course work in your undergraduate degree that would show evidence of your quantitative abilities. If that does not exist, then the GMAT is really all we have to consider. It's fine to tell us if there are work-related ways in which you have improved quant skills, but those are often hard to measure.
saurdel
How does the admissions committee view a person with advanced degrees and 33-34 years of age ? If other parts of the application are strong, does age significantly affect the chances of admission?
Corinne_Berkeley
Saurdel: Age is not a consideration in the admissions process! As you can see from our class profile, our latest incoming class is extremely diverse with an age range of 24-38.
dmaldonado
Hello, I have a question about part-time employment. I am currently an employee of a consulting company, but on the side I also work as a consultant for companies on my own on subjects that do not interfere with my employer's. Is this considered a part time job after graduation? I am not really sure how to include this in my application. Thanks.
Lee_Moderator
Include it with your regular employment -- the number of hours will make it clear that it is part-time employment.
Jonathan
For our uploaded resume, do you have a preference between one or two pages?
Corinne_Berkeley
Jonathan: You can upload either a one or two page resume
Jiafeng Gao
What's more important for you? Absolute average GPA or relative ranking in the class?
Jeff_Moderator
I don't think we can answer that. We do look at both, but I wouldn't say that we have a scale saying one is more important than the other. From all that you provide we want to see your overall academic performance.
sasha09
Lee_Moderator : I'm confused by your previous response - the application specifically says not to include internship, summer and part-time employment as a student. Is there a separate part of the application where such experience can be included?
Lee_Moderator
Yes, there is a question which asks about employment during undergraduate years.
Claudio
How does Haas value community involvement?
Pete_Berkeley
Claudio, in our admissions process we look for individuals that are developing leadership skills and who will be active members of our community, whether that means being president of the Finance Club or entering the Business Plan Competition. A past history of involvement tends to be a good predictor of which students will be active during the program.
Peter
If I also have a professional certification such as a CFA Charter, do you require a copy of the charter?
Kara_Berkeley
Peter, we do not require a copy of the charter at the application submission point. Please note that you have received this certification in your application.
jeldin
Hello, my name is Jenn. I am applying in round 1 and want to confirm that recommenders can submit all materials online and do not need signed and sealed letters if they use the online system.
Katie_Moderator
Jenn, you are correct. If your recommenders use the online system they do not need to send signed and sealed letters.
Manuel L (Chile)
If I am interested in entrepreneurship in the e-business field but I'm not a computing expert, are there opportunities at Haas to meet and work with people from other faculties more involved with technology?
Pete_Berkeley
Manuel, there are many opportunities to interact and work with individuals from other departments more directly involved in technology, including the School of Engineering, the School of Information, or the program in Bioengineering.
CarlosLascurain
Do you take a look at the GMAT quantitative and verbal scores, or just the overall score? If so, what is an acceptable score for either part?
Corinne_Berkeley
Carlos: We look at the overall GMAT score as well as the quant and verbal subscores. We will also evaluate many other components of the application to assess both quant and verbal skills, but in general, a score of 80 percentile or above is considered solid.
Steve
Does the admissions committee consider applicants with double majors?
Corinne_Berkeley
Steve - absolutely!
sasha09
Do application reviews for a particular round begin only after the deadline for that round has passed? Also, are applications reviewed in the order they are received, or is this process random?
Stephanie_Berkeley
sasha09 -- we begin compiling applications after the deadline (so it doesn't matter if you submit a month or week or 10 minutes before the deadline). We start compiling the applications and sending them off to review once they are completed -- so the only thing that may delay the review of your application is if we're missing supplemental materials: transcripts, letters of rec. We will notify you if you are missing pieces of your application.
AmbiSidhu
If one's GPA is, say, 2.9 and that person studied Engineering at a top 5 undergraduate school, does the difficulty of the program balance the lower GPA?
Lee_Moderator
The rigor of the program is considered along with the GPA.
AmyE
How important is it that we get to a class and info session at Haas before we submit applications?
Kara_Berkeley
AmyE, we want to know how your have familiarized yourself with Haas and often the best way to connect is to visit campus. If you are not able to visit, consider taking advantage of other ways to connect with Haas:
http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/learnmore.html
AlexS
In the parts of the Employment History section where the application asks for phone numbers, fax numbers, etc., if we've worked for companies that have since gone out of business, should we still include contact information for those companies or leave it blank?
Stephanie_Berkeley
AlexS, a good question! I would include the most current information you have for that company, even if those numbers no longer work.
rosalyn17
Thanks for hosting this chat. Do you have tips for reapplicants? What specific areas do you typically look at when reevaluating candidates?
Pete_Berkeley
Rosalyn17, I would encourage you to consider what has changed since your last application and what areas you may have fallen short in. Address all of them that you can, and be sure to tell us about everything that is changed, whether it is a promotion at work or a new test score.
Ushhan
Hi. Is the work I did as part of a research assistantship during my MS considered as work experience? Also, if I am from a technical background but currently work in the financial industry, what qualities should I stress in my essays?
Corinne_Berkeley
Ushhan: Internships and assistantships are typically not considered as full-time work experience. In the application essays, I would encourage you to present a cohesive story regarding your work experience to date and relate it to your future career goals.
JC
Thanks for hosting the chat today. As an international applicant, I want to know the minimum TOEFL test score you will consider to be competitive in the pool. Since the average TOEFL score was 110 last year, is a 100 score be considered too low to apply?
Corinne_Berkeley
JC: The TOEFL is only one indicator we look at to assess English language skills. It is still too early to know what this year's applicant pool will look like, so for now, the best indicator would be to look at last year's average TOEFL score, as you have mentioned.
Serena
Are applicants at a disadvantage if they have never held a formal manager position where they have a direct report?
Kara_Berkeley
Serena, you don't have to be a manager to have had leadership experience or demonstrate leadership skills. Help us understand your professional experience and the responsibilities you have had in your various roles.
ABHIJEET
Do you have any advice for joint degree applications such as MBA/JD?
Pete_Berkeley
Abhijeet, my advice would differ depending on the particular joint degree program. The JD/MBA program is somewhat challenging, since the application review is done individually by the B-school and Law School. One important question to address is why the joint degree program is necessary for pursuing your career goals--many applicants fail to address this question.
JT
When looking at GPA, if I have a master's degree, which part is more important? Undergraduate or graduate?
Stephanie_Berkeley
JT -- they're both important as we use both to evaluate your academic performance and ability to succeed academically in our program. If you didn't do as well in undergrad, your graduate performance will provide important information on how you perform at the graduate level. But remember that it's not just GPA that we're looking at when evaluating your undergraduate/graduate performance -- we're also looking at the rigor of your major, caliber of institution, trend in grades over time, etc.
Dz
What percentage of MBA students do you offer scholarships to?
Pete_Berkeley
Dz, typically in the 15% range.
Tom
I have been working full time for 8 years, but it seems like significant emphasis will still be put on my undergrad years. Why is that and is there a good way to emphasize my work experience and GMAT score on my application?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Tom, I wouldn't say that we over-emphasize undergrad experience in our review. Certainly it is a factor; we want to see how you perform in an academic environment. Still, this is a business school and post-undergrad work experience is very important. We'll be looking for career progression, management and leadership experience as a significant part of the application review along with essays, letters of recommendation, test scores, etc.
BayAreaDude
Many top schools are known for specific strong qualities... Chicago - finance, Harvard - general management, Kellogg - marketing... what would you say are Berkeley's strengths?
Pete_Berkeley
BayAreaDude, clearly general management, although with a twist, which is that we have a particular focus on developing leaders who can create, manage, and lead organizations that value and promote innovation.
Jaime
Back to Manuel's question, do you require the certificate of graduation as part of the application or upon acceptance to the program? I was under the impression that the transcripts were sufficient to apply for international universities.
Pete_Berkeley
Jean, we require it as part of the application process.
Doh!
What is the latest date to take the GMAT to have its score considered in round 1?
Jeff_Moderator
Doh!, it needs to be taken by the round 1 deadline, November 4, to be considered in round 1.
Hadar
Hello. I come from an innovation consulting company and I want to continue in consulting. I live in New York now, so if I do the MBA at Berkeley, I hope to develop a strong network with innovation consultancies there. Can you speak of any with whom the school works/ is involved with on any level?
Pete_Berkeley
Hadar, we have close relationships with many consulting companies, but a particular organization that we work with closely in innovation is IDEO.
haj518
Thank you very much for hosting this chat today. My GMAT score is not high enough to be in the average 80% range. I have 10 years of work experience and I believe I am a strong candidate despite my GMAT score. Should I apply in the first round, or re-take the GMAT and try for the second round? Which round has a better chance?
Kara_Berkeley
haj518, you should consider the overall strength of your application. There isn't a huge different between round 1 and round 2. If you think that retaking the GMAT will strengthen your application, you should take the extra time to do so. Overall, our assessment of academic aptitude takes both the GMAT exam and your academic records into consideration.
trucker
Hello, I've heard that Berkeley has an auction round for selecting electives. Can you please elaborate on this?
Stephanie_Berkeley
trucker, every student receives a certain amount of points to bid on the electives they want to take. There are strategies involved that Student Services provides when it comes time to bid on electives. The good news is that our students have diverse interests so there are only a handful of classes that you may not get into on your first try.
JT
What is the percentage of courses that use the case method? Half and half?
Stephanie_Berkeley
JT -- if you look at all of the courses we offer, the teaching methods are pretty evenly distributed among the case study method (for courses such as marketing, OB), lecture (accounting, statistics) and group project-based courses (many electives).
Kumar
Hi- I have always been an entrepreneur, so I obviously cannot get a letter from my "current employer". I am thinking of several loyal long-term customers and also my landlord, as I have been with him for 7 years and I have worked with him in growing my business. what do you think about my recommendations?
Corinne_Berkeley
Kumar: Many of our entrepreneurial applicants have requested letters of recommendation from vendors, suppliers, clients... You should choose someone who can provide detailed examples of your accomplishments and leadership potential from a professional perspective.
Adithi
Tell me some things that applicants write in their essays that would make you reject their application instantly.
Pete_Berkeley
Adithi, I can't really answer that question, but there are very few things that would cause us to reject an applicant immediately.
Ernesto Zerda
Does it matter if I am registered for the 2009 application when I am interested in applying for 2010 instead? Will I be considered a one-time applicant or a reapplicant?
Lee_Moderator
Ernesto, if you wish to apply for 2010, you will have to re-register -- each year is a separate process.
jeldin
My company is completely unsupportive of the MBA environment, and as a result I have provided a personal email address for the recommender that works for my current employer. I know that it is strongly suggested to use professional email addresses but I don't want to put my recommender at risk. How serious of a disadvantage is it not to supply a professional address for a recommender?
Lee_Moderator
Jeldin, your recommender can explain the situation in his letter.
Kenny Berlin
What percentage of Haas students choose an entrepreneurial career path after graduation?
Pete_Berkeley
Kenny, typically 5-7%, although others plan to wait a few years until they have a bit more experience before they launch.
DS'09
Is it important to describe "fit" to Haas in the goals question?
Stephanie_Berkeley
DS'09, yes it's important for you to discuss why you're specifically interested in Haas and what you will take advantage of through our program to help you succeed in your career. We want to know that you've done your research and understand how you'll benefit from and contribute to our program.
Michelle
My GMAT is below the middle 80% while my undergraduate GPA is above the middle 80%. I double-majored in Finance and Economics, receiving A's in nearly every quantitative-heavy course. Would my GPA and scores in quantitative courses be sufficient evidence that I could succeed academically at Haas?
Kara_Berkeley
Michelle, we review both your GMAT and academic records to determine your academic aptitude. Sometimes a strength in one area can balance out a lower score or weakness in another. We will review your performance in your quantitative courses and take that into consideration.
Adithi
What do people generally talk about in this optional essay: "Please feel free to provide a statement concerning any information you would like to add to your application that you haven't addressed elsewhere."
Corinne_Berkeley
Adithi: The optional essay truly is optional! Many applicants choose not to fill it out, which is absolutely fine! Others use the optional essay to provide some additional information about an aspect of their application that they were not able to thoroughly address through other essays.
Tom
I visited the campus last year during a business trip, but did not have time to sit in on a class. Will that be a deal breaker?
Lee_Moderator
Tom, we appreciate your interest -- there is no one factor that would be a deal-breaker for an otherwise competitive application. We understand that not all applicants will have the opportunity to visit the campus.
AndrewNYC
Hi Pete, thanks for the chat! I'm torn between using career examples to answer the essay questions or personal experiences. Do you have a preference?
Stephanie_Berkeley
AndrewNYC -- We deliberately leave this open to you so that you can select those experiences (whether personal or professional) that best describe who you are, what you're passionate about, etc.
Sonny
I went to 2 undergrad schools. Will Haas average my performance at both and do they take consideration of the difficulty of the school?
Lee_Moderator
Sonny, we do look at all your education -- including the rigor of a particular school and program
rosalyn1
Hello, thanks for hosting this chat. I'm a reapplicant, so will I need to resubmit my transcripts and GMAT if I have previously sent them to you?
Kara_Berkeley
rosalyn1, you do not need to resubmit your transcripts if you applied for fall 2007 or fall 2008 admission if your application was complete at that time. The GMAT exam is considered still valid if taken on or after 10/1/2003. If your GMAT exam is no longer valid, you will need to submit valid test results.
Dong Hoon
Hello! I am really interested in pursuing a career in sports marketing and would like to know about any special offerings at the school and how the school relates to the sports market of San Francisco? Thank you!
Stephanie_Berkeley
Dong Hoon, one of our student-initiated courses over the past few years has been focused on sports management/sports marketing. If you choose to be one of the student organizers, you have the opportunity to reach out to industry execs to bring them on campus to speak to the class.
joules
What information stands out most to you in a recommendation?
Kara_Berkeley
joules, we look for specific examples within your recommendation letters. You want to be sure your recommenders can support their claims with examples of your performance.
StephR
I have seen that there are many MBA consulting services out there that will help candidates with essays. I am not able to afford these services; will my essays be at a disadvantage compared with those applicants who had professional help?
Pete_Berkeley
StephR, I don't think you need to use a consulting service to present a strong application. Since we can often spot applications that have been prepared this way, it can also be a disadvantage if we feel that it doesn't really reflect the candidate.
rosalyn17
Thanks for hosting this chat! What tips do you have for reapplicants? Are there specific areas that you are looking to be addressed the second time around?
Corinne_Berkeley
Rosalyn: Thanks for joining! For reapplicants, we will be looking to see that there has been substantive change/improvement from the previous application. In general though, we will be evaluating reapplicants just like any other first-time applicant.
Yao
What's the process of applying for a student loan? When I should start?
Kara_Berkeley
Yao, please visit our financial aid website for more information on this process. You can also contact them at
finaid@haas.berkeley.edu for more guidance.
http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/mba/finaid
Martin
Regarding Raveen's question on international students staying in the US after graduation, I've read that there is currently a serious problem regarding this issue given the significant shortage of visas relative to the number of international students. Is there any particular effort being made to try to reverse this situation? Do you expect the number of international applicants to decrease due to this problem? Or is it just too early to tell?
Jeff_Moderator
Dear Martin, this is a good and important question. Berkeley is doing a number of things to assist admitted students with their post-graduation transition. We offer advising and significant career assistance. That said, there will likely continue to be problems with visas over the next few years. We do not have any influence over the flow of visas, which is determined by Congress and the US government. There has been a growing chorus of complaints from both the education and technology industries, but as yet, there is still no significant movement to freeing up more visas. As this is a political process it may take more time to resolve itself.
Adithi
When do you generally start interviewing round 1 applicants?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Adithi -- we will start issuing invitations to interview anywhere between 4 - 6 weeks after the deadline. Please be patient with us! It takes time for us to thoroughly review your application (every application is read by at least 2 members of our team) and to get through every application in the round.
Dz
Do you accept recommendation letters from alumni?
Pete_Berkeley
Unless you have worked with them directly, your two required letters should be from others. It is acceptable for an alum of the Berkeley MBA to provide an additional letter.
Paul_Collins
Related to the economic situation, but not the application process - do you foresee a different approach to recruiting on campus given the current times, or do you expect all the same companies to be recruiting and hiring for internships as usual?
Pete_Berkeley
Paul_Collins, I think many companies will be making fewer offers, and I suspect that the summer internships will become even more important as a way for companies to screen individuals to whom they may make post-MBA offers.
Dz
Can I apply to both MBA and MFE programs? If so, will it decrease my chances of admission for either program?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Dz, according to university policy, you can only have an application active with one graduate program at any one time. The exception would be our joint programs (MBA/MPH and MBA/JD). However, if you received a decision or withdrew your application from one program, you would then be eligible to apply to the other if the application is still open.
Hadar
Corinne, I've spoken with an admissions team member who told me that the deadline of Nov 4 does not constitute rolling admission, meaning only on Nov 4 does the team start reviewing the applications, and in random order. Can you confirm this?
Corinne_Berkeley
Hadar: Yes, that is correct. So, for example, even if you submit your application on Nov. 2, we will not begin reviewing your application until the deadline of Nov. 4 at the earliest, and in random order.
Kara_Berkeley
The Career Services staff has an advisor dedicated to helping international students in their career path. There are also many other ways Career Services assists students. Please visit
http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/groups/careercenter/index.html for more information.
Yao
If I would like to apply for scholarship, should I apply with admission application or after I get admitted?
Pete_Berkeley
Yao, students are automatically considered for Haas Merit Scholarships based on their application for admission; the Haas Achievement Award requires that you use the optional essay on the admissions application. Other programs, including the Maxwell Fellowship, require a separate application that you cannot submit until after you have been admitted.
JAMM
I am applying to several MBA schools (6+). I know each school has a separate online form they ask recommenders to fill-out, but with this number of applications, I'd like to simplify the process for my recommenders and ask them to submit an actual LETTER of recommendation on my behalf. I will provide them an outline of what Haas is looking to them to address. How does Haas' admissions committee look at this sort of recommendation? Will it hurt my application?
Kara_Berkeley
We prefer that recommenders answer each of our questions directly. There is, however, a space for recommendations to include a letter. Just be sure the recommender is addressing all of our questions in the letter.
suzie
Is Haas considering or does Haas have a "boot camp" that is required for students to sharpen their business skills before the MBA program?
Kara_Berkeley
suzie, we offer a quantitative workshop (often referred to as "math camp") for admitted students prior to the start of orientation and classes.
HS pros
Hi. What is the median age? Would someone who is 30 years old be considered old at Haas?
Kara_Berkeley
HS pros, the median age for our current students is 28 and the age range is between 24-38. For more profile information, visit

bayarea2004
Hi, thanks for taking our questions. Roughly what percentage of a typical incoming class has a private equity background? Does Haas have a strong relationship with the Bay Area private equity community?
Pete_Berkeley
Bayarea2004, I can't really break that down for you, since we don't collect it statistically--it gets lumped in with other areas of financial service, and it would take significant research to tease out that number. I'm sure it is relatively small, since we're talking about a niche industry. We do have strong relationships with the Bay Area PE community, and anecdotally, I know that we have a number of students in each class wishing to go that direction. Our student finance club even has a subgroup of individuals specifically interested in PE.

I have requested my current manager to provide one of my recommendation letters. For my second recommendation, would you advise me to ask a senior co-worker or my PhD thesis advisor. I would prefer to ask my thesis advisor but I've heard that a recommendation from a co-worker has more value. What is your take on that?
Pete_Berkeley
We prefer not to have letters from professors--they should both be from individuals with whom you have actual work experience.

How does Berkeley view students with a advanced degree?
Stephanie_Berkeley
ninad -- An advanced degree is one more piece of information that we use to assess your academic ability. We'll look at your performance in the program as well as how it fits with your career to date and your future career goals. We'll also look at why you're seeking an MBA and how that fits with your academic and professional experiences.
Jonathan H-G
If I am a recent graduate and I know that I will be applying in a few years once I have some work experience, what should I be doing now outside of a job to better my chances at being admitted?
Pete_Berkeley
JonathanH-G, outside of your job, I would continue to take advantage of opportunities to develop your leadership skills in community organization as well.

Jaime
Do you evaluate US applicants vs. international applicants differently in any way?
Pete_Berkeley
Jaime, one significant difference is our evaluation of English language skills; another is that we view the academic credentials of international candidates in the context of their own educational system.
AlexS
In the "responsibilities/key accomplishments" field under work experience on the application, is the Committee looking for different information than would normally be included in a resume? If so, could you all share any advice on material to include in the application?
Pete_Berkeley
AlexS, that's hard to say, as I've seen a wide variety of types of resumes. I think the most important thing is to give us enough detail that we can understand what you have learned and accomplished.
sharon1
How would the decision making process be for the MBA as opposed to the EMBA?
Pete_Berkeley
Sharon1, it is similar, but the Executive Program will expect a greater amount of work experience and looks for individuals who have achieved higher levels in their organizations, generally speaking.
dmaldonado
Hello. Is there any preferred format for the resume? Or should we just use the format we are used to? Where I live we don't use a cover letter. Should I include one in my resume upload?
Pete_Berkeley
Dmaldonado, you should not include a cover letter--just the resume or CV itself. You can use a format that is familiar to you.
SR
Do re-applicants get an opportunity to interview again?
Pete_Berkeley
SR, yes, reapplicants can interview again.
ABHIJEET
if my GPA in my second bachelors is much higher than my first, will both GPAs be considered or just the better one?
Pete_Berkeley
Abhijeet, we will consider ALL of your academic work.

In the first short answer essay, sometimes the benefits of change are seen over a series of actions rather than a single, isolated choice/event. Is it a bad idea to talk about a series of events you would change? I am thinking of a recurring activity in the past that if I could go back in time, I would embrace and approach differently.
Pete_Berkeley
Anon91, I can't really coach you on this answer--describe it in the way that you feel will make the most impact.
StephR
Do you see a difference in starting salaries among students from the full time vs. part time program?
Pete_Berkeley
StephR, that is a hard question to answer, since many of our part-time students continue to work in the same industry area, and don't have an immediate "starting" salary. Visit our career services pages for employment reports to get a sense of this.
