Stephanie_Berkeley
Welcome! My name is Stephanie Fujii and I'm the Senior Associate Director of Admissions. We're looking forward to your questions!
Cindy_Berkeley
Hello everyone! I'm ready to answer your questions.
Wendell_Berkeley
Hi everyone, my name is Wendell Tull and I am one of the Assistant Directors of Admissions. Thanks for participating in our chat. I look forward to answering your questions.
Corinne_Berkeley
Welcome everyone! My name is Corinne Kang and I'm an Associate Director of Admissions - what questions can we help answer today?
TP83
Good morning. I have a question related to the essays, specifically the word limits. Are these hard stop limits? My MBA sources have said it is ok to exceed the limit by 10-15% and I wanted to clarify with the Haas admissions folks.
Corinne_Berkeley
TP83 - good morning! While the word limits are not hard stops, it is strongly encouraged that you do your best to stay within them. You should be able to express yourself concisely within the suggested word limits.
Katie_Moderator
This is a moderated chat. Your questions are put into a queue to be answered and due to high volume we will not be able to respond to you immediately. Please do not resend your questions multiple times. They will not be answered more quickly and it may slow us down.
Bhargav
I wanted to know if there is any chance of a candidate getting through with around 16 months of entrepreneurial work experience. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any admitted candidates that have the same profile (16 months of work experience).
Cindy_Berkeley
Bhargav, Since we evaluate an application based on so many different factors (GMAT, academics, professional experience, letters of recommendation, etc.) I can't really determine your chances. Virtually all of our students have at least 2 years of work experience -- but it is not about quantity but quality of experience. So, you could be competitive looking at all different factors - but with more work experience you'll be even stronger.
Bryan Hagle
Hello - I am currently an engineer working in the energy industry, and my post-MBA plans are to re-enter the energy industry in the field of global business strategy. Considering Berkeley's proximity to multiple renewable and petroleum energy corporate offices, does the energy company have a presence in the Haas curriculum, on the Haas campus, and recruiting from Haas?
Wendell_Berkeley
Bryan, thanks for your message! Yes is the simple answer to all three of your questions.
Varun
Hi all, thank you for taking out time to respond to our queries! My query is with regard to re-applicants. Could you share your views on how you look at a re-applicant's application differently from a fresh application? I applied last year in Round 1, but didn't get a call; I am planning to apply again this year and would highly appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
Cindy_Berkeley
Varun, we do look at re-applicants a bit differently. We are looking for substantial change since the first time you applied. Therefore, we want you to provide us with a reapply statement which will address why you're a better applicant than you were before. This could include retaking the GMAT, being promoted, taking on more responsibility at work, etc.
PShah
Hey Berkeley AdCom - hope you're well! Thanks for setting this chat up, I haven't been able to make a campus visit so this is a great way for me to learn more about Haas. My questions are related to entrepreneurship. What specific programs does Haas have catered towards students wanting to start their own ventures? How does Haas leverage its location in Silicon Valley to help students?
Stephanie_Berkeley
PShah -- We have many resources available to help students trying to launch their own ventures! Classes, business plan competitions, an incubator, entrepreneurs-in-residence, speaker series, and workshops to name a few. I'd recommend checking out the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (http://entrepreneurship.berkeley.edu/main/index.html) to learn more about each of these programs. Our location certainly provides a huge advantage because venture capitalists are so close and are able to come for lectures, workshops, office hours, serve as judges and mentors for our b-plan and venture capital competitions. I'd also recommend connecting with the Entrepreneurs Association to talk with students currently involved in these activities.
eric
I have opened an account for MFE in UCB, however, I have not submitted the application because I think MBA is more suitable for me. So, if I apply the MBA program now, will UCB consider me as an applicant who applies for 2 programs in same year? Should I do something to cancel the record in MFE?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Eric, You are only allowed to apply to one Berkeley graduate program per year, so if you submit the MFE application, you will need to cancel it, if you want to apply to the MBA program. An un-submitted MFE application will not be not be a problem.
Shauntel Poulson
What personal characteristics do you look for when assessing fit with the Berkeley community?
Corinne_Berkeley
Shauntel - there are a number of characteristics that we look for, but some of the ones that are particularly important include passion, creativity, confidence without attitude, and willingness to make a positive impact. I definitely encourage you to chat with our current students to get a better sense of the culture at Haas!
lovedale
Who do you suggest we request our letters of recommendation from?
Cindy_Berkeley
lovedale, we suggest that your recommendation letters are from those that have overseen or supervised your work - not from someone who is a co-worker or peer. Clients are good choices, or someone from another dept who has worked closely with you. What's most important is to choose someone who you have worked closely with who can provide detailed examples of your professional experience.
Drea
Thanks for your time! Are there elements in the application process that are weighted more than others?
Cindy_Berkeley
Drea, I'm afraid that there isn’t one single element that is most important - we review applications holistically, looking at all elements together.
Emily
Quick question about transcripts and applying: there is a place to upload our transcripts on the online application. Do you not want an official copy until we are admitted?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Emily. Yes, you can upload your transcripts to the online application. If you are invited to interview, we will need official transcripts at that time.
matt
Hi, will not visiting the campus make one’s application weaker?
Wendell_Berkeley
Matt, not visiting campus will not make your application weaker. We have applicants from all over the globe that are unable to visit campus during their application process. Many of those do get admitted without a campus visit. So even though we would love for you to visit us, it's not going to count against you if you can't.
Javiera
Hi everyone, I was wondering when the last day is that I can apply to the MBA program (deadline) and start the program in the fall (1st semester)?
Corinne_Berkeley
Javiera - We have four application rounds, and this year, our final application deadline falls on March 10, 2010. This is the last day you can apply to the Full-time MBA program to start in Fall 2010.
goldenbear
Hi, thank you so much for your time! I have a quick question about how GMAT math scores are viewed - is there a particular math percentile below which Haas Admissions would begin to be concerned about the candidate's quantitative abilities? In short I have a very good overall GMAT score that is above the median for Haas students, but the GMAT math score is not outstanding (it is around 75 percentile). Would you advise me to retake the exam to try to get the math score higher?
Stephanie_Berkeley
goldenbear, we look at a number of factors to evaluate your quantitative preparation: undergraduate courses (calc, stats, etc.), work experience, and the GMAT quant sub-score. If you have a strong quant background from undergrad and/or work experience then 75th percentile would be ok. If not, the quant section is the only indicator we have for your quant ability -- so you'd probably want to boost your score (if you thought you could) to above the 80th or 85th percentile. You might also consider taking a calc or stats course.
Vanessa
How important is the GMAT score in selecting which students to admit?
Corinne_Berkeley
Vanessa - the GMAT score is certainly important, but it is only one of many factors that we consider in our admissions decision. In addition to your transcripts and on-the-job work, the GMAT helps give us a sense of your level of academic preparation for the MBA program. At the end of the day though, we're looking to admit people, not just numbers!
eric
If the essay question asks me to identify the courses I have taken or intend to take to demonstrate quantitative proficiency, what kinds of class should I include? I took some classes with titles like "Calculus I", "Calculus II" and "Applied Statistic" in undergraduate college, but my grades ranged from D to B only, so should I mention them? Also, I am studying for a master of actuarial science now, and I got several A+’s and A’s with 2 'B' grades from classes with titles such as “LIFE CONTINGENCIES" and "INTRO RISK THEORY.” Although they do not look like mathematics classes, they include lots of math. Also, is a “B” considered a bad grade in USA? Should I omit them too?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Eric, You should list all calculus, statistics, and upper-level math courses you've taken.
Yogi
All schools mention an ideal fit for incoming class. What would you say an ideal fit for Haas is?
Cindy_Berkeley
Yogi, This is a difficult question to answer. Since we are looking to bring in a diverse class, we are not looking for one particular fit factor. However, Haas has a very student-driven culture, so our students are very involved in the school community and very passionate. This is one factor we look for in our candidates - people who are able to contribute both inside and outside the classroom.
Aniket
Dear Admissions Committee member, I am applying to the Haas MBA program in the first round. I have done my undergraduate studies from India, and my degree certificate is in 3 languages. Is it OK if I just scan the English part of the certificate and upload it to the online application, or should I upload the entire thing (which is in 3 languages)?
Katie_Moderator
Hello, if possible, please upload the degree certificate in the original languages as well as the English translation.
Mandhir
Hi. My first question is regarding the question about quantitative ability. I have a Bachelors and Masters in Engineering and have already taken my GMAT. Do I just write the same as an answer or do I need to show some course work in addition to the GMAT?
Wendell_Berkeley
Mandhir, there is an area of the application where you should list the classes that you have taken that are quantitative in nature. That's in addition to us recognizing that you have a Bachelors and a Masters in Engineering.
Kate
Hello! Several of the Asia info sessions coming up this fall are still attributed to a week rather than a specific date on the website. Can you share when an actual date will be released? I am currently working in Cambodia and am trying to sort out flight and visa arrangements to get to one of the sessions offered in a neighboring country. Thank you!
Stephanie_Berkeley
Kate, that's wonderful that you are trying to attend one of our Asia info sessions! We are currently working very hard to secure dates and venues for Asia and hope to have the specific dates available shortly. At this point, it looks like Beijing will be 12/3 and Singapore will be towards the end of the following week. We haven't published these dates yet because a lot could still change. I'm sorry I don't have specific news for you!
Arsen
Hello, I'm Arsen from Armenia. I have a question regarding test score submission dates. I am going to submit my application for Round 2, but I'm doubtful that my GMAT and TOEFL scores will be available by December 10.
Katie_Moderator
Hi Arsen, As long as you take the exams on or before the deadline date, you may submit your application. Request to have the scores sent to us and we will verify the official scores with your self-reported scores.
Paul Cristian
Hello all! Question from an East Coast potential applicant: with little prospects of flying for an actual class visit or admissions event, what are my options to connect with students / alumni, and get a feel if Haas is good MBA match for my goals? Thanks.
Corinne_Berkeley
Paul - You're certainly on the right track by joining us on the chat today! We also have a series of information sessions coming up on the East Coast (the week of Oct. 19-23) that I would encourage you to attend. At these events, you'll have the opportunity to connect with current students and local alums to hear more about their MBA experiences. Here's a link to the dates: http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/admissions/offcampus.html
stuti
Hi. Berkeley has been historically known for its social enterprise focus. Is that still an area of strength for the school? I have 6 years of nonprofit experience and the social enterprise focus is an important consideration for me.
Wendell_Berkeley
Stuti, social enterprise is still a definite strength of our program. We teach social responsibility here and are always excited when we have applicants apply to our program with a background similar to yours.
Manuri
Hi. I have a question about my application. I already submitted my references, but now one of my references is not able to give in a reference because of official reasons. I know it says that it's not possible to change my references once submitted but is there any way that I can change that reference?
Katie_Moderator
Please call the MBA Admissions Office at 510-642-1405 (after the chat, please) and someone will assist you.
Kay
Hello all, can you speak a bit on the relationship Haas has with the Berkeley Law School? Are there organized opportunities to meet students within the other graduate programs to share ideas and build on business plans?
Cindy_Berkeley
Kay, We have a concurrent degree program with the law school (JD/MBA). There also are a number of courses that are cross-listed for MBA & JD students as well. If you are interested in more entrepreneurial activities the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation facilitates relationships between MBA students and other graduate students on campus through various activities. For more info: http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/academics/entrepreneurship.html.
EmmaVG
Hi admissions officers! I have a question regarding academic support and tutoring. I am coming from a nonprofit background, and it's been awhile since I've done any serious quantitative work. If I need a little extra help outside of the classroom, what options are available to me?
Wendell_Berkeley
EmmaVG, what's available are your fellow classmates. Because we are such a collaborative program, your fellow students with quantitative backgrounds are always willing to help their peers who don't come from a quant background. And yes, there are typically resources on campus that you can tap into for extra help depending on which class you need help in.
Bhargav
Would you recommend I apply or accrue some more work experience?
Cindy_Berkeley
Bhargav, The choice is really yours. If you feel you have some strong work experience, and are able to demonstrate career progression, leadership potential and team skills through this experience, I encourage you to apply. Of course, you'll be competing against a pool of applicants with an average of 5 years work experience – just something to keep in mind.
matt
How important is the campus visit in terms of strengthening your application?
Stephanie_Berkeley
matt, we understand that for many applicants, it's difficult to get out to California to visit. The visit is more important for you to gain a better understanding of the culture, students, classes, etc. If you're unable to visit before you apply, we want to make sure you're taking advantage of all of the other resources available to learn about our program: information sessions around the world, chats (such as this), blogs, our website, etc. I’d also recommend connecting with current students (you can email the Haas Student Ambassadors: hsa@haas.berkeley.edu) and they can put you in touch with students pursuing similar career interests, etc. What we're looking for in your application is that you've done your research to understand why the Berkeley MBA is a good fit for you.
Webb
Hi, four months ago I left my investment banking job of two years to start a company. I am wondering if you would advise getting a recommendation from my past boss or a current client that I have known and worked with for several years.
Corinne_Berkeley
Webb - If the bulk of your work experience is with the investment banking job, it would be helpful for us to the get the perspective of a previous supervisor from that company. Since you have the opportunity to submit two letters of recommendation, you might consider having one from your current start-up and another from your previous job.
Heba
I am going to take GRE test not the GMAT, and I would like to know the scores range of GRE for the students who were admitted last year or what the minimum score that you accepted of GRE test in Hass School?
Katie_Moderator
Hello Heba, I’m sorry but we do not accept the GRE in place of the GMAT. We require all applicants to take the GMAT, and submit their scores with the application.
Lordia
Hello! :) I noticed that the admission rate seems to hover at around 250/class. Is that always the case?
Wendell_Berkeley
Lordia, we actually bring in 240 per class. That is always the case, give or take a few.
Krish
Thanks for hosting this session. I am interested in private equity in emerging markets, especially India. What are the resources at Berkeley that I can use? And can you tell me a bit more about the selection process for the IBD?
Corinne_Berkeley
Krish - Our Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation offers a wealth of resources for those interested in PE including experiential learning opportunities, mentors, networking events, etc. As for the selection process for IBD, students apply in the fall semester of their first year by submitting an essay and completing a short form. More details about the program are online at: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/HaasGlobal/IBDindex.htm.
Drea
Are my odds better if I send my application in before the deadline?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Drea, no, we do not begin to review applications until the deadline date.
Daniela
What do you wish applicants did more of on their application?
Cindy_Berkeley
Daniela: My best piece of advice is to present yourself in the truest light. It's not that applicants are dishonest in their presentation - however, a lot of applicants try to tell us what they think we want to hear (very generic, standard responses). The problem is that you're not going to stand out that way. That is why I suggest that when you answer essay questions, you think about what really rings true for you. Perhaps have a good friend review your application and see if it really embodies you. Your application will come across as much more authentic, personal and true.
Daniela
I am from HK and I don't know anyone from Haas. Would it be possible to get connected with the alums over here so I can ask questions of them? Apart from that, what distinguishes Haas from other top b-schools? I know that the area of non profit is extremely strong but are there any specific strengths compared to Yale, Wharton, etc. Why do people generally choose to go to Haas vs. the others?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Daniela, these would be great questions for our students! You can visit the Student Chat Room or follow up with our Haas Student Ambassadors later. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the contact information for our alumni. They play a large role in the selection process (conducting interviews) and are available once you have been admitted. At this point in the application cycle, though, we're very protective of their time -- as I'm sure you can imagine!
urmilesh
Hello. Do re-applicants from last year need to send transcripts again?
Katie_Moderator
No, if you applied last year we will have your documents on file and you do not need to resend them.
Scott McMahon
Do you recommend using the optional essay to try to mitigate a weakness in the application, or just let it speak for itself?
Corinne_Berkeley
Scott - If there is an area in your application that you've identified as a potential weakness, the optional essay is a great place to provide details. In general, it's better to proactively address a weakness than to NOT address it and leave the admissions committee guessing.
Ben
I graduated over 6 years ago. However, I plan to have one of my professors as one of my recommenders as we have been close. He is not only a professor to me, but my mentor and latest supervisor on the charitable project I work on. Do you think my choice of recommender makes sense?
Wendell_Berkeley
Ben, we would prefer to have you get a letter from someone that has supervised you on the job. You have been out of school for 6 years so it should not be a problem to get a letter from a previous supervisor. If you have only had one job since graduating from college and you can't get a letter from a supervisor because you don't want them to know that you are applying to a full-time program, then you can use that letter from your professor. We do, however, prefer to have a letter from a former supervisor.
stuti
Hi. How many courses, outside of the Haas business school, can be taken? I have specific courses from the larger Berkeley university that I am keen on taking.
Katie_Moderator
You can take up to 6 credits outside of the Business School. The number of classes you can take depends on how many credits the classes are worth.
raghavan
Hello! I am Raghavan from India. I wish to know if work experience in a smaller upcoming organization is valued differently from work experience in a Fortune 500 company
Cindy_Berkeley
Raghavan: We have students who come from both smaller companies and more well-known fortune 500 companies. Our goal is to have students from diverse backgrounds - so we appreciate both types of experience. Of course, if you come from a smaller organization you will need to provide background so that we understand the company, and what your role was in the company - whereas we are probably more familiar with the structure of a larger fortune company. Either way, your job is to provide us with the details required.
sandman
When is the optional essay advantageous? Can you please provide information on instances where optional essays have added value to an applicant? Is it viewed negatively any time?
Corinne_Berkeley
Sandman - The optional essay has been used to address an area of weakness in the application. It could also be used to share with us some additional information that is important for the admissions committee to know, but wasn't able to be addressed elsewhere in the application. The optional essay truly is optional though, so don't feel compelled to complete it!
dgoot
Has the economic climate affected what you're looking for in a candidate? Are you looking for people who are more likely to thrive in whatever our economy is evolving into versus what it was?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Dgoot, we are always looking for candidates who will be successful -- while in our program and once they have graduated. Over the past few years we identified what makes our students and the Berkeley MBA program unique (from feedback from recruiters, alums, faculty, etc.) -- We develop leaders who lead through innovation, which speaks directly to your question about an evolving economy. We want to prepare our students for industries and jobs that may not exist today (and this is true regardless of the current economic condition). So -- yes, we are looking for students who fit our program and culture, but no, this is not driven by the economic climate.
siddharthravi
Hello. I'd like to know whether the chances of being awarded a scholarship are higher in the first 2 rounds of admissions rather than the third.
Cindy_Berkeley
Siddharthravi: It is true that it is better to apply as early as you can in order to be considered for scholarship opportunities.
stuti
I understand from an earlier chat transcript that a large proportion of the graduating students stay back to work in the bay area. To what extent does the Haas MBA help graduating students get placed in Europe?
Corinne_Berkeley
Stuti - Our career services staff works with each student on an individual basis to develop his or her career search. In fact, one of the career advisors in our Career Services Organization is focused on international students and other students looking to pursue international careers.
Jennyfer Goune
Hello everyone, my name is Jennyfer Goune. I am a Fall 2011 applicant and I am seeking information about minority admissions and/or financial aid. Are there specific minority programs for prospective Haas students? Also, are there any minority fellowships or financial aid opportunities? Thanks!
Wendell_Berkeley
Jennyfer, one of the opportunities we have, in terms of programs, is actually coming up this weekend here on campus. We have a Diversity Workshop that will take place this Saturday. If you go to our website you will see other programs that are coming up regarding Diversity programs. We don't have any minority based scholarships here in the UC system because of Prop. 209. However there is plenty of aid available that is merit based.
IT
What if you are the founder of your company, and really don’t have a supervisor? Can you use clients or people in your industry that you have worked with for a recommendation?
Jeff_Moderator
Hello IT, good question. Yes, key clients, vendors, partners are all good options in your case. We want to hear from someone who has direct, professional experience working with you and who can attest to your skills and leadership. As such, we recommend you chose someone who has had significant or key contact with you. The level and type of experience they can attest to is more important than the title they carry.
Zilles
With what seems to be such a diverse group of candidates already in the chat room, I can only imagine the far ranging group of candidates who apply. Do you have a certain demographic representation target (or quota) for admitted students to maintain a diverse community, or is it solely based on merit of the individuals applying?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Zilles, we don't have targets or quotas for any element of diversity. With only 240 students per class, we want to enroll the strongest class possible and as diverse a class as possible. We look at diversity on a lot of different levels (just in terms of work experience we're looking at industry, function, company size, geographic location, etc.). But regardless of background, we ask the same questions in evaluating academic preparation, professional accomplishments and personal qualities. For more information on what we're looking for in each of these areas, you might want to listen to our podcast on Application Tips. This should hopefully give you a better sense of our process.
Ben
Is there any advantage or disadvantage between applying in the first or second round?
Wendell_Berkeley
Ben, no real advantage or disadvantage in applying in round one versus round two. We encourage applicants to apply early and the first two rounds are what we suggest.
Lawrence
I dealt with hardships in college and graduated with a low GPA and poor grades in quant courses. Can a stellar quant score on the GMAT compensate for that? I am also considering taking statistics and accounting courses at a local college, would that be helpful?
Corinne_Berkeley
Lawrence - You're absolutely correct - a stellar GMAT (particularly quant) score can certainly help to compensate for a lower GPA and quant grades. Performing well in a calc or stats course at a local college would also be helpful. Think of it this way - if one component of your application is weak, other components should be that much stronger to help compensate.
Drea
If I retake the GMAT, do you still consider the lower score?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Drea, we consider the highest GMAT score, but you are required to report all your scores.
Tyler Hargan
I am interested in doing the concurrent degree program - MBA/Environmental Sciences. It is my understanding that I apply for the MBA program and then once in, make it known I would like to do both programs. Is that correct or is there a separate application for the concurrent program?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Tyler, we do not have a concurrent degree program with Environmental Sciences. While one has been talked about it does not exist yet and unfortunately concurrent degree programs cannot be created "on the fly". You would need to complete these programs consecutively, not concurrently. If you apply and are admitted to the MBA program you would have to complete all of the required courses over 2 years to earn the MBA degree. The Environmental Sciences degree would entail applying for and completing all of their units separately. There is no official concurrent degree program with them at this time.
Dtannenh
In the admin process, do you look down upon potential students who do not have a clear cut career choice? Do you accept many candidates with this profile?
Corinne_Berkeley
Dtannenh - One of the important factors that we evaluate in our admissions is clarity of career focus and goals. Successful applicants are able to demonstrate that they've thought through their reasons for pursuing an MBA and have a clear understanding of their future career paths.
Blake
I was not satisfied with my first GMAT score and plan on retaking the exam. However, I am currently studying for my PE and won't be able to retake the GMAT until after the Round 1 deadline. Can I submit my original GMAT scores during Round 1, then submit my new scores once they're received (during your Round 1 review process)?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Blake, in order for us to consider later scores with your application (tests taken after the R1 deadline) you would need to contact us and have your application moved to a later round. For you to be considered in Round 1 we would only be able to take tests taken before that deadline.
haas fan
How is the Haas MBA real estate major better than/ unique from other real estate programs offered by some of the other top US b-school?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Haas fan, no one ever likes this response -- but that's the question you have to answer. What are you looking for in a real estate program? Course offerings, networking opportunities, hands-on learning opportunities, career search support? Once you've identified what factors are most important, then you can identify which programs best meet/fit your needs. To learn more about the Real Estate program here, I'd recommend starting here: check out the Fisher Center for Real Estate (http://groups.haas.berkeley.edu/realestate/); contact students in the Berkeley Real Estate Club -- they can tell you why they chose Haas and the types of activities, resources, opportunities they've taken advantage of.
Ting
Do you usually give scholarships to students? Are they merit-based or need-based?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Ting, there are several scholarship options, both need-based and merit-based. Information can be found on the financial aid section of our website.
LSSF
I am interested in social entrepreneurship. Does Haas offer classes, clubs, or other programs in this field?
Cindy_Berkeley
LSSF: You may be interested in the Global Social Venture Business Plan Competition (GSVC). You also might be interested in Social Sector Solutions where teams of students work with a McKinsey partner on non-profit entrepreneurial projects. More information about all of these is available on our website.
Heba
Do u accept IELTS in place of TOFEL? What was the minimum score that you accepted last year?
Katie_Moderator
Yes we do accept IELTS. The minimum score we look for is 7 out of 9.
stuti
All top schools focus on diversity, and a greater number of qualified women students is a part of that. Can you tell me more about Haas' efforts at promoting/supporting qualified women participants into its program?
Wendell_Berkeley
Stuti, we are very active in Forte and we actually have events here on campus that focus on reaching out to women interested in attending B-School here at Haas. Please go to our website and look for upcoming dates that pertain to a women's workshop that will be taking place on campus in the near future.
Heba
Do I need a financial guarantee letter to be attached with my application, or can I send it if I am admitted?
Katie_Moderator
A financial guarantee letter is not required.
Zak
Hi, I'm bringing this question over from the student chat. I couldn't help but notice the enormity of the q@haas group. My partner and I are queer and interested in ways to participate in the community at Haas as a family. I assume that certain clubs offer those possibilities. At other schools, it is not uncommon for spouses to sit in on the occasional class or be involved in some other way. Can you speak to the approach for family involvement at Haas?
Corinne_Berkeley
Zak - As you've noted, our q@haas group is very active and would provide a strong support network for both you and your partner. We also have a Partners Club that organizes its own activities and provides additional support and networking resources. While partners are not able to sit in on classes, they are invited to participate in clubs and all social events!
slast
I registered to come out for the Women's Workshop. I've seen the general schedule, but what can I expect from the experience? I can't stay to sit in on a class, so will I get a strong enough perspective of the school through the workshop?
Wendell_Berkeley
Slast, the best part about participating in the women's workshop is that you get to network with current and former students from the program. That's what the experience is really all about.
Moses
Hi, can you share your insight about the first questions, "What are you most passionate about? Why?"
Stephanie_Berkeley
Moses, all of our application questions are opportunities for us to get to know you better. We have your transcript and resume, and so your essays are where you can tell us everything else about what makes you who you are :) You'll notice we don't specify whether you use personal or professional examples -- we leave it up to you to tell us about the experiences and accomplishments that you feel best represent you. Once you've gone through a couple of drafts, have someone who knows you well read your essays and ask them if your responses truly reflect who you are, your personality, what you're passionate about, etc.
Krish
What qualities are you seeking in a candidate during the interview process?
Cindy_Berkeley
Krish: Our interviews are primarily done by our students and alumni and we ask them to wear three hats. Would this candidate impress a recruiter? Would this candidate impress a faculty member? Would this candidate impress a current student? The interviews are blind to your application. Interviews are done by invitation only. We ask that you consider the interview to be similar to an interview for a professional opportunity.
mario
This question was asked in the foyer but maybe not answered. Would a higher GPA offset a lower GMAT?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Mario, each part of the application tells us different things about an applicant. Strengths in some areas can but will not necessarily offset perceived weaknesses in others. It is hard to say without looking at your application. GPA can tell us a lot, but looking deeper at transcripts also tells us a lot about the quality of that education. Likewise, if someone were to have a weaker verbal GMAT, but proven strength in that area in education or work history it may offset the weaker verbal GMAT. I'm afraid it is difficult to give a categorical answer to this.
OSMAN
Hi, I'm re-applicant and my goals are slightly changed from what I set last year. I'm not sure how the admission committee views such change in goal. Do I need to make much effort to explain the reasons in the essay?
Corinne_Berkeley
OSMAN - we often see that re-applicants shift their goals after gaining some additional work experience or having another year or two to reflect upon their career aspirations. While that's absolutely fine, you'll want to the reasons for this shift in your essay about what has changed since your previous application.
pk
Hi, you mentioned that many students come from around the world to Haas. When it comes to the admission interview, is it required that the student travel to Haas or is it possible to conduct it over the phone?
Katie_Moderator
We offer interviews in cities all over the US and around the world. If you are invited to interview, our coordinator will work with you to arrange a convenient time and location.
Verity
Hi Berkeley Team, I am applying with my husband and it is obviously vital that we get into the same school. Is it wise to mention this in the application process or will it not be taken into consideration at all?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Verity, this is not something we consider in the evaluation process. In the past we've had couples who were applying together tell us that they were (in the optional essay) and we've had couples who did not tell us. It's up to you -- but again, it's not a factor that we consider.
agustina
My question is about reference letters. Are the best letters the ones that provide a sense of consistency, or more about highlighting other aspects that may not get covered in other parts of the application?
Cindy_Berkeley
Agustina: In the letters of recommendation we are looking for evidence of your professional experience. We're looking for career progression, leadership potential and team skills. I think that we would expect the letter to highlight some of the same strengths highlighted in other areas of the application (consistency) but certainly provide us with new examples of where you have demonstrated these strengths and weaknesses.
Wen
Thanks for your time. Could you explain “demonstrate quantitative proficiency”? I majored in English instruction and didn't take any courses in accounting and calculus. Is there any other way that I can show my quantitative proficiency? Can you give me some examples?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Wen, When evaluating quantitative proficiency, the Admissions Committee also looks at your GMAT score, the quantitative nature of your work (if any), and courses you have taken during undergrad or after.
IT
How strongly do you weigh undergraduate GPA, especially if you have been in the workforce for 9 years? Do you look at success in continuing education classes and the GMAT, which show what you have done/scored recently?
Corinne_Berkeley
IT - In assessing your academic proficiency, we look at a combination of all the factors that you've mentioned! GPA, GMAT, any continuing education classes, as well as your on-the-job work experience.
Leo
Hi, I would like to I know when I will get the invitation for interviews after I submit the application?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Leo, interview invitations start going out 4-6 weeks after you submit your application, and continue to go out on a rolling basis.
jgruber
Hi - I know you take several factors into account when looking for the right students, but how much is the GMAT weighted? Let's say work experience, recommendations, essays, and undergrad GPA are great but the GMAT is low --what are the chances to be accepted?
Wendell_Berkeley
Jgruber, well that all depends on how low your GMAT is. Hopefully you have looked at our profile and determined for yourself how close you are to our middle range. I would suggest you re-take the exam if your score is way below the low end of our middle 80%. That being said, other areas of your application that are strong will help enhance a low score or a weak area of your application.
Brenda
Hi admissions officers! I had a question in regards to my undergrad quantitative courses. I did well enough in high school in AP calculus that I was not required to take calculus again in college. This is shown on my transcript as a course that was fulfilled prior. Also, my statistics courses were taken through my major. Are these sufficient for the quantitative courses you're looking for?
Cindy_Berkeley
Brenda, at a minimum, we expect that you have taken a stats or calc class and received a B or better. However, we also will review the Quantitative percentile of your GMAT to determine quant proficiency. Also, if you happen to use quant skills in your job we will also consider this experience.
Bryan Hagle
Admissions team, do you have any gems of advice for applicants during the essay writing process?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Bryan, be honest!!! You'll hear this from us over and over again, but I can't tell you how many applications I've read that were clearly "this is what they want to read" essays. These don't stand out. When you're writing about something you're passionate about, something meaningful, authentic -- that's what stands out to us. So to start off, sit down with a cup of tea or a glass of wine, relax, and just start writing what comes to mind. Revise many times. Then have someone you trust to be brutally honest with you, someone who is familiar with your accomplishments/personality/passions -- have them read your essays and ask them if this is all they had to read about you, does it capture who you are?
Jesse
I have heard that if an applicant's GMAT and GPA are NOT above the average, they should consider applying in Round 2 rather than Round 1. Is this true? Is there any difference in applying in the first two rounds?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Jesse, Most of our offers of admission are made from rounds 1, 2, & 3. Round 4 is more competitive because it's smaller and at the end of the cycle. There is no major difference between round 1 and round 2, and we recommend you apply when you feel your application is strong. If you need extra time, by all means, take it.
Coonoor
How easy/common is it for Haas graduates to find work on the East Coast of the US?
Jeff_Moderator
We have a very good network on the East Coast and our Career Services team has many contacts with a variety of firms and recruiters in that region. I encourage you to check out our Career Center information online http://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/careers/index.html as well as looking into our various alumni chapters on the east coast to learn more if that is an area of concern. More info about the alumni chapters can be found here http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/groups/alumni/
Jeff_Moderator
Hello everyone, as a reminder we have current MBA students online in the "Ask Students" room ready to answer your questions about the MBA experience at Berkeley.
Blake
I currently work out of my clients office and consequentially have more daily interaction with them and thus believe they are better able to speak to my abilities and growth potential. I know that 2 recommendations are requested, would you recommend 1 from my company and the other from the client? Or if I felt I would get 2 better recommendations from the client, then should I go that route?
Cindy_Berkeley
Blake, I would submit recommendations from people who you have worked most closely with and who know you the best. It can be clients or supervisors. We are looking for detailed examples of your leadership potential and career progression - so I would submit letters from those that would be able to speak to these examples.
Ravid
Hi admission! Can you elaborate about requirements for the MBA/MPH? Will a candidate applying to the dual degree be considered for the MBA only if he gets rejected for the dual degree?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Ravid, you complete the same (just one) application for the MBA/MPH program. What you'll want to focus on in your application is conveying why you're pursuing the dual degree -- how does it fit with your experience to date and your future career goals? No, if you are denied from the dual degree program, you will not be considered for the MBA program. You would have to wait until the following year to re-apply.
Amir
Does applying well before a particular deadline (whether it's Round 1 or Round 2) impact admission chances in any capacity?
Wendell_Berkeley
Not really Amir. The only impact would be is that we get to your application faster. Other than that, we are still going to wait until the notification date to let you know what our decision is.
Applicant
Hi, sorry for re-typing my question as I believe it did not go through. Do I need to send the official score reports (GMAT and TOEFL) by 20th Oct deadline for my application to be considered complete? Or should I just enter my scores in the application form and only provide the official reports if invited for an interview.
Katie_Moderator
Please self-report your scores on the application, and request to have official scores sent to us. We will verify your self-reported scores with the official scores when we receive them.
Lydia
Are all admitted students interviewed (including phone and face-to-face interview)?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Lydia, yes, all people who are admitted to the program go through an interview.
agustina
What changes has the Haas curriculum undergone to reflect the current business environment?
Corinne_Berkeley
Agustina - The Haas curriculum is extremely flexible in the sense that current economic trends and themes are constantly woven into the coursework and class projects. Professors draw upon their real-world experience and current issues in class discussions, but often invite guest speakers to add insight as well.
Daniel
I'm an older applicant (42) and am wondering what unique concerns Adcom might have about my age that should be addressed in the essays.
Stephanie_Berkeley
Daniel, it is illegal for us to consider age in the admissions process! For applicants who have a longer tenure in the workplace, we're asking the same questions we're asking of all applicants around academic preparation, professional accomplishments, and personal qualities. We tend to see greater progression and leadership from applicants with more work experience but we also understand that this depends on industry, company, etc. For any applicant, regardless of years of work experience, it's very important that we understand why an MBA now -- how it fits with your career to date and how it will help you achieve your career goals.
Lordia
Hello! :) What kind of work does the admissions team do to ensure a class that is diverse in culture, experience, and trains of thought?
Wendell_Berkeley
Lordia, we spend a lot of hours going over applications and discussing what type of contribution an applicant is going to make to the program. Your essays as well as your interview if you are granted one will tell us all that we need to know in order to help us build the most diverse class as possible.
maura
If I am applying to the MBA/MPH- is there any opportunity to also take classes in the international track (IBD I believe)?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Maura, certainly if you are on the MBA/MPH track or even a certificate program there will be a large number of electives you will want to take for that track. That said, there are people who chose to apply for and participate in IBD -- doing the MPH degree won't prevent you from being able to apply for IBD.
EWL
Hi there, can I find out whether having read law at an undergraduate level will disadvantage me at admissions as I understand applicants should have completed, at minimum, a college-level math/ stats course? Thanks!
Cindy_Berkeley
EWL, We admit applicants from many different undergraduate majors and backgrounds - including law, engineering, business, econ, liberal arts, and computer sciences. You will be provided with a core business curriculum through the Berkeley MBA program which will provide you with an overall business background. However, we do want applicants to have taken (at a minimum) a college level stats or calculus course with a grade of B or better. If you have not taken such a course - or want a refresher - I suggest that you take a class at a local community college or university. We also will look at the quant percentile on your GMAT in combination with your undergraduate classes to determine quant proficiency.
Peter
Hi. I have a question about the TOEFL score. I got a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering at University of Houston in 2005. After graduation, I've been working in US for 3 years. Do I still need to submit a TOEFL score?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Peter, if you received a Master's Degree in the US, you do not need to take the TOEFL. Please see our website for details or call the Admissions Office at 510-642-1405.
Pablo
Do we have to report all GMAT scores, but the highest will be the one considered or the last taken?
Corinne_Berkeley
Pablo - We'll weigh the highest score (not last taken) most heavily, but will also consider other scores.
marc
Do you consider two internships during undergrad studies (each of six months length) full-time work experience?
Jeff_Moderator
While there is a place to enter that information in the application, the essays section, in the employment section we are looking for work done after the completion of your undergraduate degree.
DaisyDaisy
When do you usually start to send out interview invitation to the first round applicants?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Daisy, interview invitations start to go out 4-6 weeks after the application deadline date, and continue to go out on a rolling basis.
Jesse
I have heard that if your GMAT and GPA are not at or above the average, you should consider applying Round 2 rather than Round 1. Is there any difference between applying Round 1 and Round 2?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Jesse, you want to apply as early as possible once you have the strongest application possible. Keep in mind that it's not just about the averages -- you want to be sure that you're within the competitive range (middle 80%). If one area of your application is not as strong, the rest will have to be that much stronger, which is perhaps why you heard apply Round 2 vs. Round 1-- but the context would be you should use this extra time to make sure all areas of your app are as strong as possible (letters of recommendation, essays, re-take GMAT depending on overall academic prep and if you think you can improve your score). The situation obviously differs for each applicant, so identify which areas you can strengthen and whether the extra time will allow you to do so.
YJ
How important is the GMAT AWA score comparing to other test scores, such as TOEFL, GMAT quantitative/verbal?
Corinne_Berkeley
YJ - While the GMAT AWA is important, your essays would also give us a sense of your writing skills (in an untimed environment!).
YJ
Hi, if a recommender insists that he fill out all the recommendation queries with his poor English, will it have negative effects on the applicant?
Stephanie_Berkeley
YJ, no we don't hold this against you -- but we have found that the detail and richness might suffer. If English is not your recommender's native language, you can have them write the recommendation in his/her native language and have an official translator translate the letter into English -- and then submit both.
Zachary
Thanks for hosting this forum! It's so helpful for those of us who can't make it out to visit in person. I'd like to follow up on EmmaVG's question from earlier. I'm in the nonprofit field too, and outside of stats and budgets haven't had to do a lot of day to day advanced quant work. Do you have suggestions or past examples of how to effectively answer the quantitative experience short answer question with this sort of background?
Cindy_Berkeley
Zachary: Not everyone who applies is able to talk about quant skills they have gained on the job. It really depends on your experience. However, in this essay question you can help to demonstrate your quant skills by indicating the quant courses you took in undergrad (stats, calc); or maybe the quant percentile you received on the GMAT. If you feel that this is a weaker area in your application, you can always take a class at a local community college or university to demonstrate improved quant skills.
EricL
How strict are word limits on the application? If you go a few words over, is that an issue? Apologies if that's a repeat question.
Jeff_Moderator
We don't have a hard cut off. We expect applicants to try and be as succinct and direct as possible -- as would be expected in any business environment. If someone goes over the limit significantly, it may indicate an inability to be direct and succinct.
Frank
Could you share a bit about opportunities for merit fellowships? Approximately what percentages of admittees are granted some type of funding? What is the range and average grant, if any? Thank you so much!
Stephanie_Berkeley
Frank, merit scholarships are awarded at the time of admission to those candidates who we feel are the strongest applicants. We have a number of other scholarships, fellowships, grants and loans -- many of which involve a separate process once you've been admitted. Approximately 70% of our students receive some type of funding, including loans. For our (Berkeley-Haas) scholarships/fellowships, they're typically 1/2 or full tuition for both years. Other awards have a different range.
KatzJ12
Hi. When reading reapplication essays, do you read the original and the new essays together? If not, do you have the original essays in front of you? There is a lot of overlap on the career goals essay, for instance, and I do not want to waste space or try your patience by repeating important, but unchanged elements.
Jeff_Moderator
Hi KatzJ12, we do look at all of the application materials we have, including old and new essays. While there is some overlap, the new questions are a little different and so we want to hear them addressed specifically. Also, if anything has changed and perhaps you want to answer a question differently you have that option. We will have your old answers on hand when we review.
Katie_Moderator
Hi all! Thank you for joining us. The chat will be wrapping up in a few minutes. We greatly appreciate your questions. We apologize if we didn’t get to all of them. Please check back on our website for transcripts of today’s chat and for future chat dates. The speakers will continue to address some questions already in their queue, but we will not be forwarding additional questions.
rchoi
Is the content different between local and on-campus info sessions? I am currently signed up for both, but am wondering if the information will be redundant.
Corinne_Berkeley
rchoi - the local, off-campus info sessions are presented by members of the Admissions Committee and offer an opportunity to connect with local alums. The on-campus info sessions are presented by our Haas Student Ambassadors so you'd get the current student prospective. While there might be some overlap in content, the perspectives would be very different. Also, if you are to attend an on-campus info session, hopefully you would be able to take advantage of the other aspects of our visitation program including a class visit and lunch with current students!
stuti
How specific do you prefer applicants to be about their post MBA plans?
Cindy_Berkeley
stuti: We do want applicants to come into the Berkeley MBA program with a plan. You start thinking about interviewing for summer internship positions between your first and second semester! So, we would expect applicants to have some idea of what type of summer internship they might be looking for - what are their post-MBA goals - and how their past experience fits into these post-MBA goals. We also would like to know about your long-term career objectives. Of course, in business school you are exposed to a lot of different career options - so we understand that plans do change. But we would like to hear what area or areas of focus you have (i.e. entrepreneurship, non-profit, finance, marketing, consulting, etc.).
stuti
Being a young school and also with a small class size, how does the school ensure that its students get most from the alumnae network?
Wendell_Berkeley
Stuti, we are actually one of the oldest business schools in the country. So I am not sure what you mean by young. Our alums are great about accepting requests for information from our current students in regards to careers and the choices they are looking to make post MBA.
Arkitect
Does the AdCom expect that the passion mentioned in Short Answer 1 relate to the goals stated in Essay 2?
Jeff_Moderator
Hi Arkitect, each question can stand on their own and can address different facets of you and your goals, if you like, or you can use your answers to augment or reinforce areas already spoken to in other parts of your application -- it is up to you. Overall, we are looking to understand who you are, what you want out of an MBA and how you think Haas can help you get there.
LSSF
I have 7 years of non-profit experience and my supervisor is going to write one recommendation. I was planning to have the other one come from one of my volunteers (like a client) since I don't have another supervisor. Is that ok?
Stephanie_Berkeley
LSSF, you know best who your possible recommenders are and who can best represent your professional accomplishments. It's most important that you choose recommenders who have worked closely with you and can provide specific, detailed examples. Look at the questions we ask -- can your volunteer provide detailed responses? Do they have the perspective to compare you to your peers/ discuss you impact on the organization?
Frank
Hello, I have taken both the GRE and GMAT, do you have any interest in looking at the GRE score?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Frank. We do not look at the GRE score, we only consider the GMAT score.
PShah
Does Berkeley require official transcripts sent to your admissions office prior to the deadline date? Or are unofficial transcripts uploaded / self-reported transcripts sufficient?
Katie_Moderator
Hi PShah, transcripts uploaded to the online application are sufficient. Details are outlined in the online application.
YJ
I'd like to know more about the 'Haas@Work' program. Is it designed for 2nd year students or widely open to 1st year students as well? And when can students get to know what specific programs will be given to the students or which companies will be participating next year?
Stephanie_Berkeley
YJ, Haas@Work is designed for all students. Learn more here: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/innovation/innovation16.html
Kate
Hello. Are admissions notifications e-mailed all on the same date for each application pool or are decisions rendered on a rolling basis until the notification deadline?
Jeff_Moderator
We announce our decisions on the decision release deadline. We do not render rolling decisions. On rare occasions, we have had to release some decisions a few days early, but normally we release to all on our notification deadline.
Laura
Hello, I'm planning on visiting Haas in November - what are your suggestions for getting the most out of the visit?
Katie_Moderator
Hi Laura, Please see the "Visit Haas" section of the website to learn about the visit program and what's available.
dawn
Hi again, I completed my BA in the Bay Area at SF State. I am pretty adamant about moving back to the Bay Area. From the info sessions I have gone to, Haas appears to be the school for me because of various aspects. However, I have been with my current employer for 14 years and I am certain I would like to get out of the corporate business. I've noticed many Cal recruiters are corporate. What types (or does Cal offer any) of avenues does Cal provide for individuals who would like to pursue something in the entertainment industries (i.e. entertainment management)? Or would entrepreneurship fit for anyone who has strong goals and passion in this area?
Corinne_Berkeley
Dawn - While it may seem like most of the recruiters at Haas are corporate (traditional finance, consulting, marketing, etc...), that's likely because less traditional industries (such as entertainment, nonprofit, government, etc...) don't have the resources to recruit heavily on campus. Many of our students pursue a career in digital media and entertainment, and one of the best resources would be through the Digital Media and Entertainment Club (DMEC). In fact, if I can make a shameless plug, you might be interested in attending the play conference coming up on 10/17! (http://www.playconference.org/)
AJ S
Roughly what percentage of applicants is afforded an interview opportunity?
Stephanie_Berkeley
AJ S, it differs year to year, but approximately 25 - 30% has been interviewed over the past few years.
Rajan
I have a question regarding recommendations. Who should the two recommendations be from? A Manager (Direct Supervisor) and a Director (2nd chain of command), or a manager and another manager? Is there a benefit to having a recommendation from a Director versus a Manager of the company?
Jeff_Moderator
Certainly we would like to hear from a direct supervisor. As for others, we are looking for someone (not a colleague or subordinate) who has significant experience working directly with you. People who can relate examples and experience in their recommendation tend to be stronger than managers up the line with the more significant title, but with little direct interaction with the applicant.
Prospective_MBA
Can good grades in quant courses compensate for average quant score on the GMAT for someone who has been out of school for a while?
Cindy_Berkeley
Prospective_MBA: Yes, we look at a combination of both your GMAT and quant grades when reviewing quant proficiency.
stuti
I am based in India. Are there any online forums or alumnae I can get in touch with to understand this aspect of Haas better?
Wendell_Berkeley
Stuti, we generally don't give out information about our alums to prospective students, however you can always email a question to our current students at hsa@haas.berkeley.edu
Katie_Moderator
Hi all! Thank you for joining us! The chat is wrapping up. We greatly appreciate your questions; we apologize if we didn’t get to all of them. We will be sending a transcript of this chat out in the next 1-2 weeks. The speakers will continue to address some questions already in their queue, but we will not be forwarding additional questions.
Webb
How do you view a low AWA writing score if the applicant has strong essays and has demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively in the work place?
Cindy_Berkeley
The AWA is only one factor - so we will be looking at writing skills in the essays, etc.
mucool
Hi! Thanks in advance...My question is on behalf of all the international applicants who will not be able to visit the campus, what should be best approach to answer "What Steps for Haas" question?
Stephanie_Berkeley
Mucool, if we're coming to a city near you, attend one of our off-campus info sessions! If not, review our materials (request a program guide, review our website), chats (like this!), blogs, connect with current students (contact our Haas Student Ambassadors).
Cindy_Berkeley
Thanks for your questions! Bye!
Stephanie_Berkeley
Thank you all for your questions today. Good luck with the application process!
Corinne_Berkeley
It's been a pleasure chatting with you today - thanks for all your great questions!
Jeff_Moderator
Thanks everyone; sorry we couldn't get to all of your questions. Please check back within the next couple of weeks for a transcript. Great questions all! Go Bears!
Wendell_Berkeley
Thanks everyone for participating in our chat this morning! Have a great day!
